Book Description
During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Colorado, not surprisingly, emphasizes the natural beauty of the Highest State. With a landscape ranging from alpine mountains with lush forests to arid deserts with massive sand dunes and a history that includes a rich Native American presence as well as booming mining and agriculture industries, the WPA guide shows how Colorado has earned the moniker “the Colorful State.”

Book Description
First published in 1939, this nostalgic guide includes chapters on Montana's natural setting, history, economy, and cultural life as of half a century ago, plus separate entries for Billings, Butte, Great Falls, Helena, and Missoula--which at the time boasted four hotels and five-cent bus fares. There then follow, in the WPA Guide tradition, 18 tours that crisscross the state and point out not only natural splendors along the way but also such noteworthy historic sites as Custer Battlefield, the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Boothill Cemetery in Virginia City, and the site of the "holing-up" shanty of Calamity Jane. Fourteen additional tours--four for roads, ten for trails--guide readers through Glacier National Park.

Book Description
Points of Departure encourages a return to empirical research about writing, presenting a wealth of transparent, reproducible studies of student sources. The volume shows how to develop methods for coding and characterizing student texts, their choice of source material, and the resources used to teach information literacy. In so doing, the volume advances our understanding of how students actually write. The contributors offer methodologies, techniques, and suggestions for research that move beyond decontextualized guides to grapple with the messiness of research-in-process, as well as design, development, and expansion. Serviss and Jamieson’s model of RAD writing studies research is transcontextual and based on hybridized or mixed methods. Among these methods are citation context analysis, research-aloud protocols, textual and genre analysis, surveys, interviews, and focus groups, with an emphasis on process and knowledge as contingent. Chapters report on research projects at different stages and across institution types—from pilot to multi-site, from community college to research university—focusing on the methods and artifacts employed. A rich mosaic of research about research, Points of Departure advances knowledge about student writing and serves as a guide for both new and experienced researchers in writing studies. Contributors: Crystal Benedicks, Katt Blackwell-Starnes, Lee-Ann Kastman Breuch, Kristi Murray Costello, Anne Diekema, Rebecca Moore Howard, Sandra Jamieson, Elizabeth Kleinfeld, Brian N. Larson, Karen J. Lunsford, M. Whitney Olsen, Tricia Serviss, Janice R. Walker

Book Description
The Colorado Guide is one of the shining accomplishments of the Federal Writers, who were recruited by the WPA in the days of the great depression to record the dynamic story of their State. So fruitful were their door-to-door inquiries that the public has acclaimed their labors and called for their book ever since. In the last few years it has become evident that the state was outgrowing its guide. The spectacular facts of history remained unaltered, but practically everything else burst its seams. The cities pushed beyond their limits the colleges were jammed with youth; the hard-surfaced roads unlocked remote natural wonder; the rushing rivers created dozens of new lakes; even the snowclad mountains yielded to airlift. A thorough revision was called for--and here it is. Here is the parade of the cities: Denver, the Mile-High Metropolis, building convention halls and hotels in the shadow of the gold-plated Capitol; Colorado Springs, gateway to NORAD, Pike's Peak, and the US Air Force Academy; Boulder, multiplying scientific laboratories of national renown; Pueblo, rolling steel; Aspen, spreading culture in summer and training ski jumpers in winter; even Lakewood, carved out of Denver's side, latest of the big ones. Ever since Zebulon Pike stood awe-struck before the towering Rockies Americans have flocked to Colorado to mine its wealth, cultivate its soil, build its factories, and fish in its trout-filled steams. At one end of its history are the stone houses of the Cliff Dwellers; at the other, the busy airports serving the continent. This Guide takes account of the nostalgic past and the tumultuous present. It tells how to get there, by plane, bus, train and motor car, and what roads to follow to the teeming cities, the peaks, gorges and canyons, the campgrounds and ghost towns. It describes the great changes of the last twenty-five years, during which engineering has built dams and reservoirs for irrigation, electric power and flood control; scientific mining has uncovered minerals of which the goldseekers never dreamed. It tells about the mechanization of farms and the growth of the sugar beet industry; the expansion of feed lots for cattle and the forty-odd rodeos at which the cowhands let off steam. In other words--Colorado.
