High population pressure in coastal areas has, however, led to the conversion of many mangrove areas to other uses. The world's mangroves 1980-2005, prepared in the framework of the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005, provides comprehensive information on the current and past extent of mangroves in all countries and territories in which they exist. This report provides global and regional estimates of the area covered by mangrove forests, including area changes between 2000 and 2020. It analyses the drivers of these global, regional and subregional changes for the periods 2000–2010 and 2010–2020 with the aim of improving understanding of these drivers, their interactions and how their relative importance has shifted over time. In the study that underpins this report, FAO developed and validated an easy, repeatable methodology that integrates remote sensing with local knowledge. An FAO team and 48 image interpreters worldwide collected and analysed data on mangrove area in 2020, change in mangrove area between 2000 and 2020, and the drivers of change over the two decades. It is the first global study of mangrove area to provide information on land use rather than land cover.

Ecosystem valuation is a process that assigns a monetary value to the benefits that are provided by an ecosystem and its ecosystem services. This study carries out the economic valuation of marine and estuarine coastal ecosystem services in the Canary Current Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). The CCLME stretches along the coast of Western Africa, from Morocco to Guinea, and is characterized by high biological productivity due to the upwelling of deep, cold oceanic waters along this coast. This also supports a high abundance of fish resources (both pelagic and demersal) and overall high biodiversity. This study reviews and assesses ecosystem services provided by the marine areas, coastal mangroves and seagrass meadows. These coastal areas not only provide habitats for some commercial fish species, but also feeding grounds, nurseries, or refuges. Therefore, mangroves and seagrasses can play an important role in maintaining fish stocks. L’évaluation des écosystèmes est un processus qui attribue une valeur monétaire aux avantages offerts par un écosystème et ses services écosystémiques. Cette étude cherche à réaliser une évaluation économique des services des écosystèmes côtiers marins et estuariens dans l’écosystème marin du courant des Canaries (CCLME). Le CCLME s’étend le long des côtes de l’Afrique de l’Ouest, du Maroc à la Guinée, et se caractérise par une productivité biologique élevée due à la remontée d’eaux océaniques froides et profondes (upwelling) le long de cette côte. Cela favorise également une grande abondance de ressources halieutiques (pélagiques et démersales) et une biodiversité globale élevée. Cette étude examine et évalue les services écosystémiques fournis par les zones marines, les mangroves côtières et les herbiers marins. Ces zones côtières fournissent non seulement des habitats pour certaines espèces de poissons commerciales, mais constituent également des aires d’alimentation, de nourriceries ou des refuges. Agroforestry, the word coined in early seventies, has made its place in all the developed and the developing countries of the world and is now recognized as an important approach to ensuring food security and rebuilding resilient rural environments. India has been an all-time leader in agroforestry. The South and Southeast Asia region comprising India is often described as the cradle of agroforestry. Almost all forms of agroforestry systems exist across India in ecozones ranging from humid tropical lowlands to high-altitude and temperate biomes, and perhumid rainforest zones to parched drylands. The country ranks foremost among the community of nations not only in terms of this enormous diversity and long tradition of the practice of agroforestry, but also in fostering scientific developments in the subject. Agroforestry applies to private agricultural and forest lands and communities that also include highly erodible, flood-prone, economically marginal and environmentally sensitive lands. The typical situation is agricultural, where trees are added to create desired benefits. Agroforestry allows for the diversification of farm activities and makes better use of environmental resources. Owing to an increase in the population of human and cattle, there is increasing demand of food as well as fodder, particularly in developing countries like India. So far, there is no policy that deals with specifics in agroforestry in India. But, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has been discussing on the scope of having a National Agroforestry Policy in appropriate platforms. However, evolving a policy requires good and reliable datasets from different corners of the country on the subject matter. This synthesis volume containing 13 chapters is an attempt to collate available information in a classified manner into different system ecologies, problems and solutions, and converging them into a policy support.
