Book Description
Narrates the drama of a famous preacher’s entire career in his historical context GEORGE WHITEFIELD (1714–1770) is remembered as a spirited revivalist, a catalyst for the Great Awakening, and a founder of the evangelical movement in America. But Whitefield was also a citizen of the British Empire who used his political savvy and theological creativity to champion the cause of imperial expansion. In this religious biography of “the Grand Itinerant,” Peter Choi recounts a fascinating human story and, in the process, reexamines the Great Awakening and its relationship to a fast-growing British Empire.

Book Description
Jonathan Edwards' 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons' is a collection of powerful and emotive sermons that capture the essence of early American Puritan literature. Edwards' writing style is filled with vivid imagery, biblical references, and a sense of urgency that seeks to evoke fear and repentance in his listeners. Through his intense and often graphic language, Edwards conveys the message of God's wrath towards sinners and the precarious nature of human existence. This work exemplifies the fire-and-brimstone preaching style of the Great Awakening era, making it a significant contribution to American religious literature. Jonathan Edwards, a renowned theologian and preacher, was a key figure in the First Great Awakening in the American colonies. His deep religious convictions and belief in the sovereignty of God influenced his writing and preaching, as demonstrated in 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons'. Edwards' strong emphasis on divine justice and human depravity reflects his Calvinist beliefs and his desire to bring about spiritual revival among his audience. I highly recommend 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons' to readers interested in early American religious history and Puritan literature. Edwards' impactful sermons offer a window into the religious fervor and theological debates of the colonial period, making this collection a valuable resource for understanding the cultural and spiritual landscape of early America.

The previous two-volume work George Whitefield: The Life and Times of the Great Evangelist of the Eighteenth-Century Revival is now condensed into this single volume, filled with primary-source quotations from the eighteenth century, not only from Whitefield but also from prominent figures such as John and Charles Wesley, Benjamin Franklin, and William Cowper.

Book Description
"Defining their enterprise as more in the direction of poetics than of prosaics, the Comaroffs free themselves to analyze a vivid series of images and events as objects of analysis. These they mine for clues to the 19th-century contents of the British imagination and of Tswana minds. They are themselves imagining the imagination of others, and they do the job with characteristic aplomb....The first volume creates an appetite for the second."—Sally Falk Moore, American Anthropologist

Book Description
This book examines how Methodism and popular review criticism intersected with and informed each other in the eighteenth century. Methodism emerged at a time when the idea of a ‘public square’ was taking shape, a process facilitated by the periodical press. Perhaps more so than any previous religious movement, Methodism, and the publications associated with it, received greater scrutiny largely because of periodical literature and the emergence of popular review criticism. The book considers in particular how works addressing Methodism were discussed and critiqued in the era’s two leading literary periodicals – The Monthly Review and The Critical Review. Focusing on the period between 1749 and 1789, the study encompasses the formative years of popular review criticism and some of the more dramatic moments in the textual culture of early Methodism. The author illustrates some of the specific ways these review journals diverged in their critical approaches and sensibilities as well as their politics and religious opinions. The Monthly’s and the Critical’s responses to the Methodists’ own publishing efforts as well as the anti-Methodist critique are shown to be both multifaceted and complex. The book critically reflects on the pretended neutrality, reasonableness, and objectivity of reviewers, who at times found themselves negotiating between the desire to regulate literary tastes and the impulse to undermine the Methodist revival. It will be relevant to scholars of religion, history and literary studies with an interest in Methodism, print culture, and the eighteenth century.
