Nicholas Rowe was the first Poet Laureate of the Georgian era. A fascinating and important yet largely overlooked figure in eighteenth-century literature, he is the ‘lost Augustan’. His plays are important both for the way they address the political and social concerns of the day and for reflecting a period in which the theatre was in crisis. This edition sets out to demonstrate Rowe’s mastery of the early eighteenth century theatre, especially his providing significant roles for women, and examines the political and historical stances of his plays. It also highlights his work as a translator, which was both innovative and deeply in tune with current practices as exemplified by John Dryden and Alexander Pope. This is the first scholarly edition of all Rowe’s plays and poems and is accompanied by 15 musical scores and 31 black and white illustrations. In this second volume the middle plays, The Biter, Ulysses, and The Royal Convert are presented, along with a newly written explanatory introduction by Michael Caines which precedes the full edited text. Appendices covering dedications, prologues and epilogues, performance history, the related music and textual apparatus are also included. A consolidated bibliography is included with the final volume for ease of reference.

Since this book is being published posthumous, please allow me to share what I remember about my dad, the author. Russell Storrs Hall was the third son born to Olive Agar Hall and Bertine Anderson Hall on February 4th,1917 on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. I believe he was a very serious, sensitive, studious young man growing up, who was constantly reading and searching for answers. He possessed a high intellect and a profound curiosity. He attended college in Chicago, but soon after the Pearl Harbor attack, enlisted in the Army. At some point in time, his Company was sent to serve in Panama, Central America, where he became ill from the effects of the jungle. He received a medical discharge in 1943 and returned home to convalesce. On August 5th, 1945 he married my mother, Hildegard H. Bergt. When I was young, my father worked as an insurance underwriter for George F. Brown Insurance and LLoyds of London. In 1960, after sitting for a civil service exam, he changed careers and became a Postal Carrier. My parents divorced in 1968, and dad later remarried in 1971 to Lorraine R. Lawler. In 1982 he retired from the downtown Chicago Post Offifi ce as supervisor. My father’s lifetime passion and hobby was researching for this manuscript, and he dedicated his retirement years to writing this book. His wife Lorraine was his source of encouragement. He fifi nally completed his book only a few months before his death, February 10th, 1998. I am very proud to be his daughter, yours truly, Janice Gold-Orland.

The thrust of these five volumes is contained in their title, London Opera Observ’d. It takes its cue from the numerous texts and volumes which — during the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — used the concept of ‘spying’ or ‘observing’ by a narrator, or rambler, as a means of establishing a discourse on aspects of London life. The material in this five-volume reset edition examines opera not simply as a genre of performance, but as a wider topic of comment and debate. The stories that surrounded the Italian opera singers illuminate contemporary British attitudes towards performance, sexuality and national identity. The collection includes only complete, published material organised chronologically so as to accurately retain the contexts in which the original readers encountered them — placing an emphasis on rare texts that have not been reproduced in modern editions. The aim of this collection is not to provide a history of opera in England but to facilitate the writing of them or to assist those wishing to study topics within the field. Headnotes and footnotes establish the publication information and provide an introduction to the piece, its author, and the events surrounding it or which caused its publication. The notes concentrate on attempting to identify those figures mentioned within the texts. The approach is one of presentation, not interpretation, ensuring that the collection occupies a position that is neutral rather than polemical.
