Book Description
The Wonderful World of Joseph McCrumble' is a highly entertaining, but occasionally tragic, insight into the life and times of Dr Joseph McCrumble; an erstwhile yet quietly charismatic scientist-artist who is thrust into the world of celebrity after consulting on a doomed reality-TV programme. Writing in his on-line diary, Dr McCrumble sets out to simply enlighten the public to his valuable work on parasites of both animals and humans, undertaken at the now infamous Cumbernauld Institute of Parasitology (location undisclosed, but definitely nowhere near the Scottish new town of Cumbernauld). Unfortunately, events soon take a turn for the worse, and we begin a tumultuous adventure with more twists and turns than an amateur plumbing convention. On the lighter side, there's kleptomania, kidnapping, nocturnal clinches with naked strangers, unexpected pregnancy and imprisonment. All these escapades involve his family and colleagues, whose gamut of quirks and idiosyncrasies can only be described as 'colourful.' A more life-threatening aspect of the author's life is seen when his diary takes us on precarious journeys to the wildlife parks of East Africa, the blustery highlands of Scotland, and the dark, ominous jungles of Papua New Guinea - a place where Dr McCrumble has experiences that even Joseph Conrad (author: The Heart of Darkness) would balk at. Despite the plethora of tragicomic events that Dr McCrumble has to endure, he maintains his philanthropic ethos and insists that a large slab of the profits of this book, his self-declared magnum opus, be shared between the Matangini Project (a charitable venture supporting community projects in East Africa), and Children In Need. Note: This edition of the diary also contains a 70 page story called 'Five Days in Denver' - an entirely fictional and racy account of scientists behaving badly at a scientific conference.

Book Description
"From the New York Times bestselling author--the first Ballad novel to feature the epic, and gorgeously-portrayed, American Revolution John Sevier had not taken much interest in the American Revolution, he was too busy fighting Indians in the Carolinas and taming the wilderness. But when an arrogant British officer threatened his settlement--promising to burn the farms and kill families--the war became personal. That arrogant officer is Patrick Ferguson of the British Army--who is both charmingly antagonistic and surprisingly endearing. Inventor of the Ferguson rifle, and the devoted lover to his mistress, Virginia Sal, Patrick becomes a delightful anti-hero under McCrumb's watchful eye. Through varying perspectives, King's Mountain is an elegant saga of the Carolina Overmountain Men--the militia organized by Sevier (who would later become the first governor of Tennessee) and their victory in 1780 against the Tories in a battle that Thomas Jefferson later called, "The turning point of the American Revolution." Peppered with lore and the authentic heart of the people in McCrumb's classic Ballads, this is an epic book that will build on the success of The Ballad of Tom Dooley and her recent return to the New York Times bestseller list. Featuring the American Revolution, this a huge draw to readers old and new, and special to McCrumb who can trace her lineage to the character John Sevier"--

Book Description
The definitive account of the Stonewall Riots, the first gay rights march, and the LGBTQ activists at the center of the movement. “Martin Duberman is a national treasure.”—Masha Gessen, The New Yorker On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York's Greenwich Village, was raided by police. But instead of responding with the typical compliance the NYPD expected, patrons and a growing crowd decided to fight back. The five days of rioting that ensued changed forever the face of gay and lesbian life. In Stonewall, renowned historian and activist Martin Duberman tells the full story of this pivotal moment in history. With riveting narrative skill, he re-creates those revolutionary, sweltering nights in vivid detail through the lives of six people who were drawn into the struggle for LGBTQ rights. Their stories combine to form an unforgettable portrait of the repression that led up to the riots, which culminates when they triumphantly participate in the first gay rights march of 1970, the roots of today's pride marches. Fifty years after the riots, Stonewall remains a rare work that evokes with a human touch an event in history that still profoundly affects life today.
