Of all the written portraits of the delegates who attended the Federal Convention of 1787, few are as complete and compelling as those penned by William Pierce Jr. (1753–89), one of four delegates from Georgia. While at the convention or shortly thereafter, Pierce produced character sketches of fifty-three of the fifty-five delegates. Although widely quoted and cited, the sketches—until now—have never been analyzed or annotated in detail. John R. Vile's study offers new insights into the workings of the convention and the character and roles of its delegates, as well as Pierce's little-known life, which included time as an artist. Vile reveals, for example, that the time prior to the establishment of national parties when the framers could have successfully met together in convention may have been a relatively narrow historical window. Following overviews of events leading to the 1787 convention and of Pierce and his immediate family, several chapters deal specifically with the character sketches. They cover Pierce's arrangement of the sketches and their subjects, his evaluations of the delegates' personal qualities and reputations, his assessments of their rhetorical abilities, and his descriptions of their public services, occupations, and miscellaneous matters. Two concluding chapters add further context. One examines a set of somewhat overlapping sketches that Louis Guillaume Otto, the French minister to the United States, penned about members of Congress in 1788. The other looks at writings by Pierce's son and namesake that also include assessments of various Founding Fathers. Gathering Pierce's sketches in full, with ample annotations and secondary materials, this is a valuable reference on Pierce's life, work, and times.

MEET THE AUTHOR Joe Taglieri is a professional journalist and musician (drum set and Latin percussion instruments) in Los Angeles. He has written on a range of subjects for a variety of publications since the 1990s. Taglieri's forte is writing about governmental and economic issues, and he has a keen interest in sports and the arts, most notably music, television and film. He holds a degree in print journalism from the University of Southern California and has studied, taught and performed via the drum set for nearly 25 years and has done the same with Latin percussion instruments such as conga and bongo drums, cajón and timbales for more than 15 years. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK By no means a laudatory puff piece, the book also very vividly details instances when the Wise Men favored positions that in retrospect weren’t a credible portrayal of wisdom. Some examples include Kennan’s seeming advocacy at times for authoritarian systems including as a model for the U.S. domestic power structure, McCloy’s favorable view of Japanese internment camps during World War II, and Harriman’s decision to pressure journalists working at Newsweek, in which he owned a controlling interest, to alter their critical coverage of daytime bombing raids over Germany in 1943 (The Wise Men). The Wise Men’s Eurocentric focus with regard to world affairs and Soviet expansionism also ill-prepared them and their top aids to deal with the rise of Cold War struggles in East Asia, especially with regard to China, Korea, and Vietnam. What especially makes this book valuable is that the authors based the bulk of their research on the papers each man left posthumously to his respective estate and on interviews with surviving Wise Men. Because each of the six preferred to operate relatively out of public view compared with later counterparts, definitive biographies on them weren’t available until Isaacson and Thomas’ work was published. Readers undoubtedly will gain keen insights on 20th century history as a result of this rigorous exploration of the lives and actions of men who so greatly influenced the political and economic future of subsequent generations... Philosophy and anthropology have long debated questions of difference: rationality versus irrationality, abstraction versus concreteness, modern versus premodern. What if these disciplines instead focused on the commonalities of human experience? Would this effort bring philosophers and anthropologists closer together? Would it lead to greater insights across historical and cultural divides? In As Wide as the World Is Wise, Michael Jackson encourages philosophers and anthropologists to mine the space between localized and globalized perspectives, to resolve empirically the distinctions between the one and the many and between life and specific forms of life. His project balances abstract epistemological practice with immanent reflection, promoting a more situated, embodied, and sensuous approach to the world and its in-between spaces. Drawing on a lifetime of ethnographic fieldwork in West Africa and Aboriginal Australia, Jackson resets the language and logic of academic thought from the standpoint of other lifeworlds. He extends Kant's cosmopolitan ideal to include all human societies, achieving a radical break with elite ideas of the subjective and a more expansive conception of truth.
