Book Description
Excerpt from The Wilderness and the War Path The life of the American Indian is not so destitute of the interest created by variety of incident, as might be supposed by a casual observation of the habits of this singular race. It is true that the simple structure of their communities, and the sameness of their occupations, limit the Savage within a narrow sphere of thought and action. Without commerce, agriculture, learning, or the arts, and confined to the employments of war and hunting, the general tenour of his life must be monotonous. His journies through the unpeopled wilderness, furnish him with no information as to the modes of existence of other nations, nor any subjects for reflection, but those which nature supplies, and with which he has been familiar from childhood. Beyond his own tribe, his intercourse extends only to savages as ignorant as himself, and to traders but little elevated above his own moral standard. But there are, even in savage life, seasons of great excitement, and instances often occur in which individuals are drawn into adventures of the most singular and perilous description. Book Description
Excerpt from The War-Path: A Narrative of Adventures in the Wilderness A dense fog hung over the placid surface of the Delaware River, and enveloped in its folds many of the ancient buildings of Burlington, then the capital of the colony of New Jersey. The stately mansion of the British governor, William Franklin, situated on the beautiful green bank so much admired at the present day, was wrapped in the vapour, and, as was often said of its occupant, seemed lost in a mist. Even the haunted tree in front of the governor's residence - the witches' sycamore - was reported by fearful pedestrians to have vanished, or at least to have become invisible. Yet, notwithstanding the gloom which oppressed the atmosphere, a most extraordinary sound of hilarity burst from the hall of one of the dwellings on the principal street running at right angles with the river. The house from which the sound proceeded was the habitation of a solemn Quaker. The hall-door was open, and within, erect as a young man of thirty-five, stood Thomas Schooley, in his sixtieth year, surrounded by several of his friends, of about the same age and stature, all being tall and athletic, and habited alike, as they were all Quakers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Wilderness: A Battle Picture Affirmation Where stand I in this welter of the world? With Thee O Christ, who speak I for? for Thee Naught else is possible, Thou hast the words Of eternal life, and thru the weakness of My flesh Thy word runs keen in cleansing power And by Thy blood my sinful soul is pure. Whilst thru the Holy Spirit, centered deep, The body radiates an influence mild, Pervasive so unlike in nature, and In power from force electric, vibrations Coarse, and the soul illumines; thru its light The corporate atoms are inflused with life Tranquilizing blood in arteries and veins And the last sensitive filament of nerves, Thus human flesh is freed from foul obsessions, In texture like unto a child's again. And by the Spirit man's unhampered soul About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Battle of the Wilderness It was my first acquaintance with the sea, and I think I was fortunate in the spot where I gained my first impressions of it. For never yet have I stood on a beach where the water, rocking in long, regular beats, as if listening to music in its dreams, spread away in such mild union with the clouds and sunshine. Book Description
Excerpt from On the Warpath On an average I hunted every third day; it was astonishing the amount of meat the employees and their Indian families consumed, although, of course, with the exception of wild berries and pommes Mamba, - an edible root found everywhere on the prairie in the spring, -meat was practically their only food. The day had not yet come when flour, bacon, beans, and sugar could be purchased in Fort Benton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
