Book Description
The parable of the Prodigal Son is made the basis of the discussion found in this little book. It is no attempt to spiritualize every word and line of the parable, but because the author seemed to see in it the clear outline of a dozen cardinal principles of Christian theology, it seemed good to him to set them forth in the relation they bear to each other in the parable. Neither is it a series of sermons. While such a series was preached from the pulpit of the Seventh and James Street Baptist Church, there is no attempt here to reproduce them. Neither do we claim to set forth a compendium of theology, for there are some vital matters not hinted at in the little passage; but it is a brief discussion of the fundamentals found in this, the most natural of all stories. And as such doctrines as are found here play such a large part in the average life, and as they sweep the field from the highest note to the lowest dirge, and lead the reader along the trail which many a soul has passed to his ruin, it is the plan to point them out in their relation to the parable, then to enlarge upon them in a way that will meet the danger, or the need of some wanderer along life's path. There is no special merit claimed for the little volume, but it is sent forth with a prayer that it shall bless some life: that a danger signal shall be swung across the path of a reckless or careless one: that a light of hope shall be held high for some honest enquirer feeling his way back to God and peace: that a call shall be sent out that shall pierce the almost impenetrable chasm of despair and find some soul ready to die, and shall plant hope and courage in the heart, and turn his eyes back to a God of compassion and mercy. Don't Waste Your Cancer
Author: John Piper
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433523337
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 18
Book Description
How are we as Christians called to respond when cancer invades our lives, whether our own bodies or those of our friends and family? On the eve of his own cancer surgery, John Piper writes about cancer as an opportunity to glorify God. With pastoral sensitivity, compassion, and strength, Piper gently but firmly acknowledges that we can indeed waste our cancer when we don't see how it is God's good plan for us and a hope-filled path for making much of Jesus. Don't Waste Your Cancer is for anyone touched by a life-threatening illness. It first appeared as an appendix in Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. Repackaged and republished, it will serve as a hope-giving resource for healthcare workers, pastors, counselors, and others caring for those with cancer and other serious illnesses. The booklets are also available in packs of ten.

Pages : 64
Book Description
A choice lies before you: Either waste your life or live with risk. Either sit on the sidelines or get in the game. After all, life was no cakewalk for Jesus, and he didn't promise it would be any easier for his followers. We shouldn't be surprised by resistance and persecution. Yet most of us play it safe. We pursue comfort. We spend ourselves to get more stuff. And we prefer to be entertained. We are all tempted by the idea of security, the possibility of a cozy Christianity with no hell at the end. But what kind of life is that really? It's a far cry from adventurous and abundant, from truly rich and really full, and it's certainly not the heights and the depths Jesus calls us to. Discover in these pages a foundation for fearlessness. Hear God's promise to go with you into the unknown. And let Risk Is Right help you see the joys of a faith-filled and seriously rewarding life of Jesus-dependent abandon! Risk Is Right is a significantly expanded version of a chapter previously published in the book Don't Waste Your Life (chapter 5).

The Design of The Waste Land
Author: Burton Blistein
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 9780761841388
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 452
Book Description
"The Design of "The Waste Land" offers a detailed, comprehensive explanation of T. S. Eliot's enigmatic poem. It relates The Waste Land to earlier and later poems by Eliot, demonstrating that the major poems describe a continuous spiritual odyssey or quest undertaken by the same individual, initiated by the moment of ecstasy in the Hyacinth garden." "Blistein's analysis of Eliot's sources reveals that the protagonist's glimpse of "the heart of light" is equivalent to drinking from the Grail, or communing with God. The incarnate deity momentarily transforms the Hyacinth garden into the likeness of the Edenic paradise. With the inevitable passing of the moment of communion, the protagonist in effect is expelled from the paradisiacal garden as mankind was from Eden. By contrast, the familiar world appears to him a wasteland. The protagonist seeks to drink again from the divine Source and return again to the garden as it was when transfigured by the divine presence. His is a quest for grail and homeland."--BOOK JACKET.
