Lions of Marjah: Combat As I Saw It
Author: Ryan N. Rogers
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780578891224
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
"Lions of Marjah" is a book that I started while fighting the Taliban in the Helmand River Valley Province of Afghanistan. Living, eating and sleeping amongst the enemy. The book begins with an introduction to my history in the corps and drops the reader in when I re-enlisted and moved to 3rd Battalion 6th Marines where I was assigned to Kilo Company 2nd platoon as a infantry Squad Leader. It talks about the challenges that a new squad leader faces when entering a new platoon and the challenges faced by the new guys he means to lead. Next the book introduces the deployment to Afghanistan and the mission that our unit was tasked with. We would be going into Marjah and liberating the people there from the totalitarian grips of the Taliban. We would invade the city of Marjah by helicopter with one other company from 1st Battalion 6th Marines, while the rest of the Companies from both Battalions surrounded and squeezed the enemy in toward us. We would be tasked with seizing and holding Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) objective (OBJ) number 2, which was a land bridge road intersection where a suspected Master Bomb Maker lived and operated. We were to clear and hold the area and await follow on instructions. With stiff resistance and next to constant fighting this took 3 days longer than it was supposed to. The book moves from firefight to firefight through the first 4 weeks of fighting and then breaks down the deployment in sections (chapters) and covers the experiences therein. The sections range from contact patrols to the emotions and experiences of killing another human being to losing one of my own guys. The book has a variety of after-actions and lessons learned from the different engagements throughout the time in Marjah, to share experiences and provide real situations to think about for the warfighters that protect the nation. This book drives at the heart of the infantry community and will really put the war fighting experience in perspective for those who have never been.

Into Helmand with the Walking Dead
Author: Miles Vining
Publisher: Pen and Sword History
ISBN: 1526767872
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
Two marines share their experiences of serving in Afghanistan and dealing with the shock of returning home to civil society. The Marines of First Battalion, Ninth Marines earned their macabre moniker “The Walking Dead” in the Vietnam War. Into Helmand with the Walking Dead follows the experiences of two Marine infantrymen from 1/9 fighting in Afghanistan. Following the 11 September attacks in 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom catalyzed the longest war in United States history. The lives of thousands of Afghans, Americans, and many others were forever altered due to the ensuing war. The book is a brutally honest portrayal of life and death in the Marine infantry both at war in Afghanistan and upon returning to the home front, where issues of reintegration and suicide become a reality. This is the tale of the young Americans who became infantrymen and conducted America’s foreign policy in its most ruthless and straightforward manner. But war, in and of itself, is only playing a small part. The culture and environment from which they reentered civil society would leave them uncertain, and confused as to the cataclysm they had just left. This book is a testimony to their experience and the legacy of war on their generation.

Radioman: Twenty-Five Years in the Marine Corps: From Desert Storm to Operation Iraqi Freedom
Author: Andrew Hesterman
Publisher: Pen & Sword Military
ISBN: 9781399090759
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
"RADIOMAN tells a universal story -- about war, family, and growing up. Andy Hesterman's 25 years in the Marines span a huge range of world events and personal experiences. I found myself laughing, rooting for him, and shaking my head at the insanity of it all. A great book!" - Nathaniel Fick, NY Times best-selling author of ONE BULLET AWAY"From a recruit surviving boot camp to a Major flying combat helicopters and controlling F/A-18s in Iraq, Andy Hesterman shares the pride of the Corps and the pain of saying goodbye to your family for yet another deployment. With Radioman, you'll feel like you've put on the Marine cammies and marched alongside Hesty for over two decades of service to our country." - Dell Epperson, Captain, U.S. Navy (Retired)"Radioman is far more than the story of one man's 25-year journey through the modern Marine Corps - as fascinating as that story is. It is also an account of the extraordinary changes - technological, tactical, moral - that have utterly transformed the American military in that time. Both gripping and honest, Radioman is also told with a humor and humility that makes for an extremely pleasurable read." - Scott Anderson, New York Times best-selling author of THE QUIET AMERICANSFrom a Gulf War grunt to a full-fledged Marine Major in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Andrew Hesterman saw it all. Radioman offers a highly personal and unfiltered view of the Marine Corps as it transitioned from the post-Vietnam analog Reagan era to the post-9/11 high-tech George W. Bush and Obama years.Radioman begins with Andy as a recruit at boot camp and the ensuing training that leads to formally becoming a Marine. After comm school and the reserves, Andy is called to active duty in 1991 for the Gulf War, where he experiences combat up close in Kuwait. The next personally, professionally, and politically tumultuous decade brings marriage (and divorce), flight school and helicopter missions in Kosovo, the shock of 9/11, another marriage, and children. Andy's journey culminates as an officer in Iraq, where he directs air support for the Marines in Fallujah.Co-authored by Robert Einaudi, a close friend of Hesterman's since high school, Radioman provides an honest and vivid military portrait of the Marine Corps and the modern US military seen through the experiences of one Marine.

A tough dragon, the M1A2 Abrams tank and its crews were often called to crack the toughest nuts on the battlefield, and victory, even survival, was not guaranteed. It is a gritty and visceral dive into the combat experience, flavored with the anguish of loss, the exhilaration of victories, the frustrations of defeats, and the humor required to survive. Along the way, the story shares rarely told insights into the duties and expectations of an Army junior officer.

Pages : 257
Book Description
Marine Maxims is a collection of fifty principle-based leadership lessons that Thomas J. Gordon acquired commanding Marines over a career spanning three decades of service. Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 430
Book Description
This book includes papers presented at the Third International Transformation (ITX3) Conference and Workshop on Leader Development, held in Washington, DC, at the National Defense University (NDU) on June 19-20, 2013, as well as a summary of the conference discussions. Sponsored by Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (HQSACT), and supported by the International Transformation (ITX) Chairs Network, the conference brought together academics, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the topic of Changing Mindsets to Transform Security: Leader Development for an Unpredictable and Complex World. In July 2012, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin E. Dempsey, U.S.A., released the Joint Education White Paper, challenging those in the Professional Military Education and Joint Professional Military Education community to develop "agile, adaptive leaders with the requisite values, strategic vision and critical thinking skills necessary to keep pace with the changing strategic environment." Seventeen of the papers published here were presented in Washington. Two of the papers were submitted before the conference, but the authors were not able to attend. The views are those of the individual authors. Based on the themes developed during the conference, the papers are grouped in five categories: 1) Human Dimension of Transformation; 2) Changing Nature of Adult Education-Drivers of Change; 3) Perspectives on Joint Education; 4) International Attitudes; and 5) Enlisted Education and Other Concepts.
