Book Description
Excerpt from The Virginia Medical Journal, 1858, Vol. 10 When a person is stricken down by a shock of apoplexy or palsy, the power of the nerves to stimulate the voluntary muscles to action is interrupted, because certain changes in the cerebral centre do not then take place; or if they do, corresponding changes in that portion of the peripheral brain (of which we shall presently speak), which is appro priated to the muscles of volition, do not occur, and paralysis of motion ensues. Book Description
Excerpt from The Virginia Medical Monthly, Vol. 6: April, 1879 From such researches in chronic malarial cachexia, the blood, in regard to its general physical qualities, will be found inordinately thin; imperfectly disposed to coagulate; of a color, both in the arteries and veins, darker than usual, except in a few instances when it is pinkish and limpid, as in the last stage of prolonged epistaxis. The serum often still entangles some coloring matter, and when the clot is very dark, is apt to be of a deep yellow a color of which the skin of the patient partakes to some extent. Book Description
Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.
