This book focuses on the performance of oral epics and explores the significance of performance features for the interpretation of epic poetry. Francis James Child, compiler and editor of English and Scottish Popular Ballads, established the scholarly study of folk ballads in the English-speaking world. His successors at Harvard University, notably George Lyman Kittredge, Milman Parry, and Albert B. Medieval literature is to a large degree shaped by orality, not only with regard to performance, but also to transmission and composition.
