This ambivalence and high use of irony makes it, even today, difficult to determine Austen's attitudes towards society and the question whether her novels are to be interpreted as conservative, modern or feministic pieces of literature. Romantic novel, Bildungsroman, comedy of manners and comedy of character are some examples for the various terms Austen's novels have been labeled. In particular in Pride and Prejudice, an ironic tone is predominant throughout the novel. As Klingel Ray states, Austen is "first and foremost a satirist. And for a satirist, irony is the major tool of language." In order to analyse the novel thoroughly and adequately, it is thus of paramount importance to study Austen's use of irony and her intentions and motives behind the ironic statements and events in the book. This essay seeks to investigate Austen's use of irony in Pride and Prejudice. After discussing the definition of irony that should be applied when studying Austen's works, including an explanation of the different motives behind her use of irony, the author's treatment of irony in the structure of the plot and her narrative strategy will be illustrated. An analysis of the two most ironic characters in Pride and Prejudice will then follow, and their relative contribution to the ironic tone of the novel will be depicted with the aid of several examples. Finally, two exceptions from the prevailing ironic tone in Pride and Prejudice will be stated and explained.

This book first takes the reader through an in-depth discussion of discourse in fiction, authorial presence and irony. Then, an analytical reading of Pride and Prejudice is presented, relying on two theories concerned with the pragmatics of irony to illustrate how foreknowledge of the entire novel heightens the reader's perception of irony in free indirect discourse (FID). Whilst acknowledging that the definition of irony as echoic language effectively describes the way the narrator seems to "ventriloquize" other voices, the book shows that a multistage approach can better account for the processes involved, given that activation of the initial (non-ironic) meaning occurs when FID causes the first-time reader to confuse the characters' voices with narrative report. By relying on multistage theories to account for irony generated by FID, the book presents a different approach, and, therefore, constitutes essential reading for scholars and students desirous of broadening their understanding of this narrative technique.

Satire and humor was an effective way for Austen to express her opinion on what was going on around her at the time without having to attach her name directly to these unpopular opinions on topics like love, marriage, and scandal. In what is quite possibly her most whimsical, respected, and admired work, originally titled, First Impressions, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice entices its readers to envision themselves as the protagonist in the ultimate tale of "enemies to lovers". Crafting each of her characters to perfection at the age of just 20, Austen has seemingly illustrated the ideal model of what marriage was like in Regency England, with quite possibly one of the most prominent and renowned opening sentences of any novel, "It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife," (Austen 1). Jane Austen’s worldwide popularity is not least due to the remaking of her novels for the visual media. Of the fifty-odd Austen related productions since 1938, forty-three of them adapt her novels to the various screens of cinema, television, computer and tablet. However, her attraction for film-makers is undoubtedly promoted by her own qualities. As a novelist, Jane Austen has been particularly recognized for her ironic voice, which dominates all her stories and gives the readers a peculiar perspective on her world. Do film-makers want this, and if so, how do they transmit her attitude of amused distance? In the present book, Marie N. Sørbø investigates the function and targets of irony in two novels and seven films. Irony and Idyll is the first book-length study of Austen’s irony since 1952, and the only comparative analysis of all the available screen adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. On the bicentenary of their publication, these novels continue to influence modern culture. Marie Nedregotten Sørbø has taught English literature at Volda University College, Norway, for many years, including courses on film and fiction. For her doctoral degree she wrote a dissertation on the reception of Jane Austen on screen. Sørbø has contributed the Norwegian chapters to the volumes on The Reception of Jane Austen in Europe (2007) and The Reception of George Eliot in Europe (forthcoming, 2015). She was part of the leadership of the European COST Action “Women Writers in History” (2009-13), and is a Principal Investigator in the HERA funded project “Travelling TexTs 1790-1914: The Transnational Reception of Women’s Writing at the Fringes of Europe” (2013-16).
