Book Description
For more than three decades, the multifaceted alliance between the United States and Japan has contributed significantly to the security of Japan and the maintenance of peace and security in the Far East. With the end of the Cold War, new sources of potential threats have arisen at a time when Japan's national self-confidence has been shaken by nearly a decade of economic stagnation, a highly fluid political situation, and an inadequate institutional structure for crisis management and strategy formulation. Osius examines how Japan is trying to redefine its identity from a nation whose constitution renounces war as a sovereign right to a normal country involved in United Nations peacekeeping operations and regional military relationships. In his initial chapters, Osius focuses on the purpose of the security alliance and argues that U.S.-Japanese interests coincide enough not only to sustain the alliance, but also to warrant strengthening and promoting it. He then examines the challenges and opportunities for an enhanced alliance over the next decade. Together, he maintains, the United States and Japan can address broadly defined security concerns, such as energy supply, weapons of mass destruction proliferation, transborder crime, piracy, and illegal narcotics, as well as environmental issues, infectious disease, economic development, and humanitarian and disaster relief. However, if it is to thrive, the U.S.-Japan alliance must remain dynamic rather than static and must be nurtured, sustained, and enhanced by both parties. An important analysis for policy makers, scholars, and students of U.S.-Japanese political and military relations and Asian Studies in general.

New Perspectives on U.S.-Japan Relations
Author: Curtis, Gerald L.
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
How relevant today is an alliance that was forged between a powerful United States and a weak Japan in the context of a cold war struggle with the Soviet Union? In what ways have the changes in the relative power positions of the two countries and the structural changes in the world economy created new challenges to the U.S.-Japan relationship and how are the two countries responding to those challenges? These are some of the important questions addressed by the eight Japanese and American authors of this volume. Their focus ranges from issues of military relations, trade and financial management, and shifting security perspectives to the roles of the mass media in the bilateral relationship. A truly binational effort, the book brings together the thinking of some of the best-trained younger political scientists to focus on the present and future of one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world.

Pacific Alliance
Author: Kent E. Calder
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300146736
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
Despite the enduring importance of the U.S.-Japan security alliance, the broader relationship between the two countries is today beset by sobering new difficulties. In this comprehensive comparative analysis of the transpacific alliance and its political, economic, and social foundations, Kent E. Calder, a leading Japan specialist, asserts that bilateral relations between the two countries are dangerously eroding as both seek broader options in a globally oriented world. Calder documents the quiet erosion of America's multidimensional ties with Japan as China rises, generations change, and new forces arise in both American and Japanese politics. He then assesses consequences for a twenty-first-century military alliance with formidable coordination requirements, explores alternative foreign paradigms for dealing with the United States, adopted by Britain, Germany, and China, and offers prescriptions for restoring U.S.-Japan relations to vitality once again.

The US-Japan Alliance in the 21st Century
Author: Fumio Ota
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004213678
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 181
Book Description
The year 2004 marked the 150th anniversary of the signing of the first treaty of peace and amity (Treaty of Kanagawa) between the United States and Japan – a treaty which over time has both bloomed and failed, and falls into three phases, each lasting for a period of approximately fifty years. Phase one, which began in a context of force majeure but ended positively, lasted until the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5; phase two began positively with the Treaty of Portsmouth which followed, but ended disastrously with the outbreak of the Pacific War; phase three began in 1952 with the San Francisco Peace Treaty and continues today. The author, who offers a significant Japanese view of the alliance as both a scholar and high-ranking military officer, explores the history, but also poses the question, what will be the relationship for the next fifty years. Through a close analysis of the nature of alliances, current issues and specific case studies, including the impact of a possible peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula, he concludes that for the long-term stability of the Asia Pacific region, a continuing interdependent relationship between Japan and the US is a sine qua non. Fumio Ota is a Vice Admiral (ret’d) of the Japanese Naval Defense Forces, and until recently, was Director of Japan’s Defense Intelligence Headquarters.
