Rivers of Light
Author: Miriam Kalman Friedman
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 0815654790
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
Growing up in a conservative, middle-class family in Texas, Claire Myers Owens sought adventure and freedom at an early age. At twenty years old, she left home and quickly found a community of like-minded free spirits and intellectuals in New York’s Greenwich Village. There Owens wrote novels and short stories, including the controversial novel The Unpredictable Adventure: A Comedy of Woman’s Independence, which was banned by the New York Public Library for its “risqué” content. Drawn to ideals of selfactualization and creative freedom, Owens became a key figure in the Human Potential Movement along with founder Abraham Maslow and Aldous Huxley, and became an ardent follower of Carl Jung. In her later years, Owens devoted her life to the practice of Zen Buddhism, moving to Rochester, NY, where she joined the Zen Center and studied under Roshi Philip Kapleau. She published her final book, Zen and the Lady, at the age of eighty-three. Friedman’s rediscovery of Owens brings well-deserved attention to her little known yet extraordinary life and passionate spirit. Drawing upon autobiographies, letters, journals, and novels, Friedman chronicles Owens’s robust intellect and her tumultuous private life and, along the way, shows readers what makes her story significant. With very few role models in the early twentieth century, Owens blazed her own path of independence and enlightenment.

ISBN: 1627876308
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
Adventures are often best when they aren't planned. At least that's been the case for Rod Shipley. Just released from the Marine Corps and studying geomorphology in college, Rod never dreams of working with exotic animals. He just needs a job. So when he sees an employment ad at a local drive-thru safari park, he thinks, why not? Little does he realize how this random decision will forever alter his life. He is hired and soon discovers that the safari park is not just a park for tourists. It is the largest importer/exporter of exotic animals in the world, and he is enlisted to help care for more than two hundred animals waiting to be shipped overseas. A youth with no experience, Rod learns from the ground up how to endure all the bumps, cuts, and bruises that come with working with rhinos, elephants, chimps, bears, and big cats. The Adventure: The Art of Earning One's Stripes details Rod's exciting adventures raising a baby rhino, training and working with a pride of lions for a Hollywood movie, battling floods to save animals, escorting animals for overseas shipping, developing a reptile show, and more -- all accompanied with extensive and colorful photographs. After five years on the job, Rod is transformed from a scatterbrained youth to a well-disciplined and focused wildlife ranger.

The Adventure of Discipleship
Author: Daniel A. Keating
Publisher: Emmaus Road Publishing
ISBN: 1949013251
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
Jesus tells us that to be his disciple we must surrender everything and, with his grace, brave the path provided for us by God. Such a sojourn will surely be marked by joy, suffering, uncertainty, and—above all—adventure. Accordingly, The Adventure of Discipleship presents the Gospel through the lens of great adventure stories—from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia to popular adventure movies, comic book superheroes, and TV series. While these stories we create and read and retell are but reflections and refractions of the great adventure of discipleship, they provide us with genuine insight into life with Christ. Author Daniel Keating shows why we must respond to the call of discipleship with venturesome faith, as many great saints have before us. Along the way of discipleship, we come to understand the cost of following Jesus, the importance of hope in light of setbacks, and the gift of true friendship in this great adventure.
