Book Description
Our saga began with a mysterious hit-and-run accident on a narrow, snow-swept highway in eastern North Carolina at 7:15 p.m. on December 20, 1920. It ended three months later in a hail of gunfire on the fourth-deck passageway of a Panama-bound steamship in Baltimore harbor. Could these two seminal events relate to the presumed accidental deaths of seventeen elderly residents of five rural North Carolina Coastal Plain counties, each of whom just happened to be the last surviving member of his or her line? The authorities were mystified. Perhaps the reader should not expect a happy ending. Interesting? Immensely. Predictable? Absolutely not. Another page-turner? Most assuredly.

Book Description
A brief, lyrical novel with a powerful emotional charge, Rules for Old Men Waiting is about three wars of the twentieth century and an ever-deepening marriage. In a house on the Cape “older than the Republic,” Robert MacIver, a historian who long ago played rugby for Scotland, creates a list of rules by which to live out his last days. The most important rule, to “tell a story to its end,” spurs the old Scot on to invent a strange and gripping tale of men in the trenches of the First World War. Drawn from a depth of knowledge and imagination, MacIver conjures the implacable, clear-sighted artist Private Callum; the private’s nemesis Sergeant Braddis, with his pincerlike nails; Lieutenant Simon Dodds, who takes on Braddis; and Private Charlie Alston, who is ensnared in this story of inhumanity and betrayal but brings it to a close. This invented tale of the Great War prompts MacIver’s own memories of his role in World War II and of Vietnam, where his son, David served. Both the stories and the memories alike are lit by the vivid presence of Margaret, his wife. As Hearts and Minds director Peter Davis writes, “Pouncey has wrought an almost inconceivable amount of beauty from pain, loss, and war, and I think he has been able to do this because every page is imbued with the love story at the heart of his astonishing novel.”

Book Description
When Near Becomes Far explores the representations and depictions of old age in the rabbinic Jewish literature of late antiquity (150-600 CE). Through close literary readings and cultural analysis, the book reveals the gaps and tensions between idealized images of old age on the one hand, and the psychologically, physiologically, and socially complicated realities of aging on the other hand. The authors argue that while rabbinic literature presents a number of prescriptions related to qualities and activities that make for good old age, the respect and reverence that the elderly should be awarded, and harmonious intergenerational relationship, it also includes multiple anecdotes and narratives that portray aging in much more nuanced and poignant ways. These anecdotes and narratives relate, alongside fantasies about blissful or unnoticeable aging, a host of fears associated with old age: from the loss of physical capability and beauty to the loss of memory and mental acuity, and from marginalization in the community to being experienced as a burden by one's children. Each chapter of the book focuses on a different aspect of aging in the rabbinic world: bodily appearance and sexuality, family relations, intellectual and cognitive prowess, honor and shame, and social roles and identity. As the book shows, in their powerful and sensitive treatments of aging, rabbinic texts offer some of the richest and most audacious observations on aging in ancient world literature, many of which still resonate today.

Book Description
Learn the causes of—and consequences from—elder abuse of men For the most part, often only women are considered the victims of elder abuse. However, men are also subject to this disturbing social problem. Abuse of Older Men examines the diverse aspects of this surprisingly widespread issue that includes sexual abuse, abuse by intimates, and benign neglect in the health care field, as well as effective treatment strategies. This unique resource provides the latest research and crucial discussions of why the problem is often invisible, under-studied, and under-treated. Detailed explorations include risk assessment, differential detection of abuse of one gender over the other, the risk of abandonment, economic exploitation, and the issues of older men who had been abused in childhood. In the past, elder abuse literature has—quite correctly—mainly focused on the abuse of women, who represent the majority of older persons. Abuse of Older Men expands the discussion of this distressing social challenge to include the other gender, reviewing the different types of abuse and the reasons why it is not readily apparent in today’s society. This compelling text examines in detail the causes and consequences of elder abuse of men. The under-reporting of abuse is addressed, along with suggestions on ways to better approach various problems. This insightful resource is extensively referenced and provides tables to clearly present data. Issues discussed in Abuse of Older Men include: intimate partner abuse perpetrated against older men sexual abuse of older men in nursing homes the impact of gender on the reporting of elder abuse neglectful aspects of osteoporosis in older men past relationships that increase the risk of the neglect of older fathers news accounts that repost the frequency and types of abuse against men identifying and treating victims societal forces that affect older men’s risk of mistreatment recommendations for structuring services to better meet victim’s needs the social construction of manhood as an important factor in understanding the abuse of older men Abuse of Older Men provides crucial information practitioners, educators, researchers, and students in social work, nursing, medicine, law, gerontology, adult protective services, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, domestic violence, counseling, ethics, public policy, and aging networks.

Niko saw it first. “MiG’s on our tail.” “Thanks for that.” Matt put the small aircraft into a dive. Tasha’s stomach dove with it. Matt flew as close to the ground as he could, staying just high enough to miss the trees. If they were shot down, at least they wouldn’t have far to crash. Not flying in a straight line, Matt weaved in and out the top branches of the trees, up and down, using military strafing maneuvers. Tasha felt like she was on a roller-coaster. The MiG, flying at a speed much faster than the small plane, flew over them. “Dave send those coordinates yet?” Matt asked. Tasha checked her phone. “No, not yet.” Now, the MiG was now coming straight at them. “Let’s play chicken,” Tasha suggested. “Crazy woman.” Matt shook his head. “But smart. Hang on.” He pulled back on the yoke and the airplane rose at an alarming rate, pressing Tasha back into her seat. “Um . . . I was just joking. You know my sense of humor.” The plane kept gaining altitude until the MiG was directly in their line of sight. “Matt. Sarcasm. It was only sarcasm. I wasn’t serious. If the pilot gets over the shock, he’s going to blow us out of the sky.” Tasha could imagine bullets ripping through the windshield. “He’s got to get over the shock first,” Matt said. He didn’t waiver, but flew steadily toward the MiG. Little plane facing off with big bad-ass military jet. Tasha couldn’t imagine a scarier sight. “What the hell? Are you going to wait until you can see the white of his eyes?” Matt laughed, crazily enough seeming to enjoy himself. Flashbacks from his military days, perhaps? “Going down.” He put the plane into another sharp dive. Down, down, down. He was so focused his face looked like a granite statue. The MiG shot over the top and disappeared behind them. Only trouble was, Tasha’s stomach was still going up, up, up. It was possible she was going to lose the food she’d eaten earlier. “How the hell do you do this for a living?” “What happened to my tough woman?” “Your woman? I’m sure I’ll need to analyze that when I’m not about to barf.” She held onto her head, took deep lung-expanding breaths through her nose. He tossed her a glance. “You are looking a little green, baby.” She only managed a sideways glance. “Call me baby again, and I’ll cut out your tongue.” **** Will Tasha cut out Matt's tongue?
