Excerpt from Syphilis In preparing this volume for the profession it has been the aim of the author to present the subject of syphilis in as practical a manner as possible. For this reason a considerable portion of the work is devoted to diagnosis and treatment. The chapter on laboratory diagnosis is made especially full, as today the desirability, in fact the necessity, of laboratory aid is more evident for the successful treatment of syphilis than for any other disease. Matters of theoretical and historical interest, of course, are discussed, but usually only when they have some bearing upon the practical handling of the subject. The author has drawn freely from the literature of syphilis at his command for his material and has added his personal views and experiences. In all instances, when possible, he has given credit to those authors whose work he has cited. During the three years which have elapsed since the appearance of the first edition the author has been particularly impressed with the importance of visceral syphilis. For that reason he has attempted to review the literature and has practically rewritten the sections dealing with this subject. Certain other sections, for example, that on the syphilodermata, have been somewhat amplified. The literature on syphilis which has been published during the time since the appearance of the first edition has been thoroughly reviewed and all new material of importance added. In the early part of my professional career, I had charge, for several years, of the hospital department of a large Charitable Institution, in which venereal patients, and those affected with blennorrhagic diseases daily presented themselves; and I have now devoted more than thirty years to the therapeutics of syphilis and kindred disorders, as they may properly enough be termed. From time to time I have tested a great variety of remedies, and have pursued, by way of experiment, almost every line of treatment that has been brought to notice with any claims to favorable regard. Excerpt from Syphilis: A Symposium It is gratifying, especially as syphilis is not exclusively a venereal disease with victims among the dissolute only, to note that a majority of those pre-eminently qualified to pass judgment on the subject seem to agree now that it is a curable disease, with certain rather infrequent excep tions. Even syphilitic parents, according to most of the distinguished contributors to this sym posium, can, except in unusually malignant cases, be so thoroughly cured in from two to five years, as to procreate or bear healthy offspring. Some of these writers doubt whether it is good policy for a physician ever to promise such a result un qualified, since in rare exceptional cases, despite the most skillful treatment, the disease taints the system, and would endanger offspring for a longer period, and in certain of these cases it is possible that the patients may never escape en tirely the danger of a later outcropping of the poison in themselves or children. Excerpt from A Report Upon Some of the More Important Points: Connected With the Treatment of Syphilis In the publication of this Report, I have purposely abstained from quoting the opinions of others as far as possible, feeling that personal experience alone upon such a subject can now be acceptable to the profession. I mean no disrespect to those who have preceded me in this inquiry, as I am acquainted with the opinions they have expressed, and have perused their works with interest. Venereal diseases are seen in the public hospitals upon a large scale. Their frequency must be a source of regret to all, invading as they do every branch of society. But I am far from regarding them in that very serious light which some would make us believe, - that they are interminable in their results, and pass out of one infection from generation to generation, blighting the growth, and being the parent of an endless variety of ailments. It appears to me that the poison in general wears itself out, except in the very severe cases. Fortunately, the transmission of Syphilis from parent to offspring is comparatively uncommon.
