Book Description
Tradition is a notoriously bad master, but it can be a useful servant. In this book Professor Bruce traces the development of Christian Tradition through the last 2,000 years and examines its special relevance to Christian thought today. Hold fast to the traditions wrote Paul to the Christians in Corinth. Yet some would regard complete freedom from any kind of tradition as the sign of spiritual maturity and emancipation. That is because of the mistaken idea that tradition is always bad, and this book is a valuable corrective of that idea. In it Professor Bruce examines the part that tradition has played in Biblical interpretation, in theology, in creeds, in Christian education, and particularly in Church life and organization, beginning with the ancient Jewish Traditions of the Elders down to the present day. He shows how even in quarters that profess to have discarded tradition, and whose very position is based on their declared freedom from it, that very fact can become a tradition in itself. In a final chapter Professor Bruce shows the relevance of different streams of tradition in the dialogue between Christians in the present day.

Book Description
Jerusalem to Illyricum is the geographical space and ca. AD 34 to 57 the time frame for Paul's church planting mission. Acts includes this within its meta-narrative, and while historically accurate, it is not raw history like Paul's letters. In this study Barnett is seeking references to Paul's initial missionary "arrival" (eisodos) and the local cultural pushback. Of particular interest for history and theology is his encyclical to the Galatians and his account of the dispute with Cephas in Antioch. Paul's success in his mission to the gentiles in Syria and Cilicia provoked the rise within the Jerusalem Church of those he calls "false brothers" whose colleagues travelled to "agitate" the Galatian believers and to drive the gentile believers in Antioch from the common meal. Some years later a band of preachers from Jerusalem sought to capture the church in Corinth, intending to then capture other churches in Macedonia and Asia. Paul's missions and writings have been the subject of numerous large studies which, however, unintentionally imply that Paul's mission years were longer than they were and that his mission writing occupied a lengthy time space. His nine missionary letters were written ca. AD 48 to 57, a mere decade, and all of which point to Paul's astonishing energy and drive.

Book Description
The newest volume in the Pillar New Testament Commentary series interprets 1 and 2 Thessalonians in light of new knowledge about the first-century world of Thessalonica. This fruitful approach better illuminates the impact of the gospel on its original readers and, in turn, shows how potent a force it can be for the church and society today.Gene L. Green first provides an in-depth study of the Thessalonians themselves -- their history, land, socioeconomic conditions, and religious environment. This fascinating discussion leads into informed verse-by-verse commentary that extracts the fullest possible meaning from these important New Testament texts.By carefully bridging the biblical and modern worlds, Green clarifies just what these pastorally astute letters say about many areas in which Christians often seek guidance -- perseverance amid suffering and trials, attitudes toward daily work, questions concerning Christ's second coming, and more.
