Book Description
Excerpt from The Topolobampo Pacific Railway: A Commercial and Statistical Review, Showing Its Local, Transcontinental, International, and Interoceanic Features and Advantages; Illustrated With Diagrams and Maps HE construction of transportation routes from the interior to the seaboard has occupied the attention of the United States ever since it became an independent Republic. Even before the adoption of the Constitution, in 1789, Gen'l Wash ington urged the importance of uniting 1n commercial ties the Mississippi Valley with the Atlantic States, by means of a canal from the Potomac, or James river, to the headwaters of the Ohio, and wrote to the President of Congress and the Governor of Virginia in advocacy of the project. As early as 1817 the Erie canal was commenced, and was opened in 1826, thereby uniting the grain regions of the West with New York city. A few years later the era of railways was fairly inaugurated, and the work of their construction has continued until the whole Mississippi Valley and all States east of there are covered with a perfect net-work of lines, all of which connect with the great trunk roads leading to the Atlantic seaboard. Empire and Revolution
Author: John Mason Hart
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520246713
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 722
Book Description
"This is an extraordinarily important history of both U.S.-Mexico relations and of the political, economic, social, and cultural activities of Americans in Mexico."—Friedrich Katz, author of The Life and Times of Pancho Villa "Empire and Revolution is empowering as well as informative, providing a detailed record and judicious interpretation of the protean relations between the United States and Mexico. As John Mason Hart convincingly narrates, the association is of dynamic importance for people of both countries. While there have been studies on discrete parts and periods of the U.S.-Mexico relation, this book charts and anchors the relation globally. Hart allows the reader intellectual as well as imaginative insight into the multifaceted social, cultural, and political reality of the sharing of North America—then, now, and in the future."—Juan Gomez-Quinones, author of Mexican-American Labor, 1790-1990

The River Has Never Divided Us
Author: Jefferson Morgenthaler
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292778686
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 402
Book Description
Winner, William P. Clements Prize, Best Non-Fiction Book on Southwestern America, 2004 Not quite the United States and not quite Mexico, La Junta de los Rios straddles the border between Texas and Chihuahua, occupying the basin formed by the conjunction of the Rio Grande and the Rio Conchos. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the Chihuahuan Desert, ranking in age and dignity with the Anasazi pueblos of New Mexico. In the first comprehensive history of the region, Jefferson Morgenthaler traces the history of La Junta de los Rios from the formation of the Mexico-Texas border in the mid-19th century to the 1997 ambush shooting of teenage goatherd Esquiel Hernandez by U.S. Marines performing drug interdiction in El Polvo, Texas. "Though it is scores of miles from a major highway, I found natives, soldiers, rebels, bandidos, heroes, scoundrels, drug lords, scalp hunters, medal winners, and mystics," writes Morgenthaler. "I found love, tragedy, struggle, and stories that have never been told." In telling the turbulent history of this remote valley oasis, he examines the consequences of a national border running through a community older than the invisible line that divides it.
