For prediction purposes, the assumption was made that the booms and canopy can be considered separately. The canopy was then considered to have a known shape for purposes of determining its aerodynamic performance. On the basis of slender-body wing theory, the geometric and aerodynamic characteristics of two-lobed parawings are completely determined. Such wings have a vertical plane of symmetry and possess a cusp at the root chord at the same elevation as the leading edges. By superposing the two-lobed solutions with previously determined one-lobed solutions, it is possible to determine the properties of parawings in which the root chord (keel) is not at the same elevation as the leading edges. As examples of such parawings, the family of parawings with no leading-edge singularity is determined and the effectiveness of changes of keel incidence for the production of lift is calculated. Tabular data for use in aerodynamic design are presented together with several calculative examples. (Author).

Low-speed wind-tunnel studies were made of the effects of camber and twist and the effects of aspect ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics of parawings. To determine the effects of camber and twist, tests were made both with the conventional conical-type canopy, which provides camber and washout, and with a cylindrical-type canopy which provides essentially zero camber and twist. With regard to aspect ratio, tests were made of parawings having aspect ratios of 3 and 6; the range was thereby extended well beyond that of previous investigations. The degree to which airfoil and wing theory can be used to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of parawings was also investigated.

Numerical solutions of the pressure distributions of blunt wedges for Mach numbers of 10 and ∞ are presented. The pressure distributions have been integrated to provide the inviscid lift, drag, and pitching-moment coefficients of any circularly blunt-wedge airfoil. The effects of varying surface angle, nose bluntness, and gas specific-heat ratio are discussed. A hypersonic wedge theory, derived from explicit oblique-shock equations, is introduced and is shown to predict accurately the loading and aerodynamic characteristics of surfaces with attached shocks. With appropriate account taken for nose bluntness, the theory is shown to be applicable to blunt airfoils.
