Book Description
Excerpt from The Theology of the Early Christian Church, Vol. 2: Exhibited in Quotations From the Writers of the First Three Centuries, With Reflections The following course of Lectures being designed to afford the means of judging, by copious extracts, of the theology of the first ages of the church, the reflections which are interspersed may be regarded as mere helps to the formation of just conclusions, and may be adopted or rejected according to the degree of evidence which they present. As the selections are the result of an independent research in the works of each writer, the translations also were made at the same time, and are so far literal, perhaps, as to be often inelegant; but it is only by this more simple honest course that the cause of truth is to be maintained and advanced. On all great questions the quotations are sufficiently continuous to enable the reader to judge of the connexion; and where the extracts are brief, the references are so minute as to enable the scholar to verify the sense. When this depends on the rendering of a few words, these are given in a foot note; but to have furnished the originals of the whole would have required a second volume. Book Description
In Christianity in the making, James D.G. Dunn examines in depth the major factors that shaped first-generation Christianity and beyond, exploring the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism, the Hellenization of Christianity, and responses to Gnosticism. He mines all the first- and second-century sources, including the New Testament Gospels, New Testament apocrypha, and such church fathers as Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus, showing how the Jesus tradition and the figures of James, Paul, Peter, and John were still esteemed influences but were also the subject of intense controversy as the early church wrestled with its evolving identity.

Book Description
The Encyclopedia of the Early Church is a two-volume reference work providing concise and precise information on all topics concerning the first eight centuries of Christianity. Valuable to historians, archaeologists, philosophers, and philologists as well as theologians, this work extends the knowledge of how Christianity evolved to become the most important influence in the history of Western civilization. Tracing the growth of the church from its tiny beginnings in an upper room to its dominance of Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa in the eighth century, scholars from many disciplines produced articles ranging from a few sentences to ten thousand words on all the major and most of the minor people, works, ideas, and issues of the formative period of Christianity. The first major encyclopedia to cover the life, thought, and growth of Christianity, this work offers full treatment of doctrines, creeds, and heresies, of iconography and art history, of archaeology and geography, and of monasticism and asceticism.
