Excerpt from The Texas Revolution: Distinguished Mexicans Who Took Part in the Revolution of Texas, With Glances at Its Early Events Don Lorenzo de Zavala was born at Merida, in Yucatan, in 1789. His mind was early turned to political speculations. In 1809, when he left college, there being no press in Yucatan, he formed an association of liberals, with the View of disseminating his principles by reading his manuscript essays to the members. Two years after he established the first political newspaper which ever appeared in the province. In 1814 he was elected a deputy from Yucatan to the Spanish Cortes; but when he was about to embark for Europe, a decree of Ferdinand VII. Arrived, annulling the Spanish Constitution of 1812, and proscribing its known and zealous supporters. Zavala, being unmistakably one of these, was arrested, fettered and imprisoned in the Castle of San Juan de Ulloa, at Vera Cruz, where he remained over three years. During this time he succeeded in obtaining books, and lightened the hours of confinement by studying medicine, in which he made himself proficient. On being liberated in 1818, he returned to Yucatan, and found himself destitute under the process of official pillage which had followed pro scription, and now his prison studies brought him the means of sub sistence. A century before the arrival of Stephen F. Austin's colonists, Spanish settlers from Mexico were putting down roots in Texas. From San Antonio de Bexar and La Bahia (Goliad) northeastward to Los Adaes and later Nacogdoches, they formed communities that evolved their own distinct "Tejano" identity. In Tejano Journey, 1770-1850, Gerald Poyo and other noted borderlands historians track the changes and continuities within Tejano communities during the years in which Texas passed from Spain to Mexico to the Republic of Texas and finally to the United States. The authors show how a complex process of accommodation and resistance—marked at different periods by Tejano insurrections, efforts to work within the political and legal systems, and isolation from the mainstream—characterized these years of changing sovereignty. The eight essays included in this volume examine the dominant narrative of Texas history and seek to establish a record that includes both Mexican men and women, groups whose voices have been notably absent from the history books. Finding documents that reflect the experiences of those outside of the mainstream culture is difficult, since historical archives tend to contain materials produced by the privileged and governing classes of society. The contributing scholars make a case for expanding the notion of archives to include alternative sources. Bluebonnets and tumbleweeds, gunslingers and cattle barons all form part of the romanticized lore of the state of Texas. It has an image as a larger-than-life land of opportunity, represented by oil derricks pumping black gold from arid land and cattle grazing seemingly endless plains. In this historiography of eighteenth– and nineteenth–century chronologies of the state, Laura McLemore traces the roots of the enduring Texas myths and tries to understand both the purposes and the methods of early historians. Two central findings emerge: first, what is generally referred to as the Texas myth was a reality to earlier historians, and second, myth has always been an integral part of Texas history. Myth provided the impetus for some of the earliest European interest in the land that became Texas. Beyond these two important conclusions, McLemore’s careful survey of early Texas historians reveals that they were by and large painstaking and discriminating researchers whose legacy includes documentary sources that can no longer be found elsewhere. McLemore shows that these historians wrote general works in the spirit of their times and had agendas that had little to do with simply explaining a society to itself in cultural terms. From Juan Agustin Morfi’s Historia through Henderson Yoakum’s History of Texas to the works of Dudley Wooten, George Pierce Garrison, and Lester Bugbee, the portrayal of Texas history forms a pattern. In tracing the development of this pattern, McLemore provides not only a historiography but also an intellectual history that gives insight into the changing culture of Texas and America itself.
