Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History The beginning and the end of historical evolution are the most interesting things to study and teach. A former presi dent of this Association, Henry Adams, once said: There is no history left for Americans to write except that of the North American Indians and the twentieth century. Although somewhat satirical, this remark implies a certain truth. All history begins with savagery and ends, like the story of the Jews and of the Christian Church, in prophetic ideals - in visions of things to come. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. The nation has entered this war in no jingo spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History, General, Political and Social The New Educator's Library presents in a convenient form that is likely to appeal to many specialist teachers and others whose interest lies in a select few of the aspects of Education much of the subject matter of The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education recently issued by the Publishers; in fact, the scheme is due in great measure to the suggestions of many readers of the latter work, pointing out the desirability of issuing in sectional form the authoritative contributions on the various subjects. It is hoped that these little books embodying, as they do, the results of research and experience of educationists and others of high distinction in their subjects, will serve a really useful purpose to teachers, to students, and to many others connected with or interested in educational matters. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History, and Other Papers IT has seemed to some of the friends of the late Professor H. L. Withers, that they might honour the memory, and extend the usefulness, of a life that, measured by years, was all too short, if they put together some of his writings on subjects that lay near to his heart, together with such extracts from his letters and such a brief biographical sketch as might suffice to recall to those who knew him a personality of wonderful charm, and give to others at least some faint impression of what he was. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the Teaching of History The following pages are concerned with the teaching Of boys and girls in the middle forms Of secondary schools, and even for this stage deal with only a small number Of the numerous problems presented by the teaching Of history. They aim at bringing into strong relief a few fundamental positions, and make no claim to be an ex haustive treatment of the subject. If, therefore, certain methods and principles of proved value are not men tioned, it must not be concluded that they have been either overlooked or undervalued. My thanks for valuable advice are due to my colleague Miss A. J. Cooper, to Mr. J. Wells, Fellow and Tutor of Wadham College, to Mr. J. B. Baker, Tutor to the Non Collegiate Students, and to Mr. E. Barker, Fellow and Tutor Of St. John's College. It must not be assumed that they are necessarily in agreement with my views. I have also to acknowledge the kindness of Prof. Foster Watson, who allowed me to see the proof-sheets of his book, T he Beginnings of the T eacning of Modern Subjects in England, and of Messrs. A. C. Black in permitting me to use extracts from their publication, E nglis/t History I llustrated from Original Sources. Book Description
Excerpt from Methods of Teaching History This book was intended to be the first of a series entitled a Pedagogical Library, devoted to methods of teaching, one volume of which was to be occupied with each of the more important branches of instruction in grammar and high schools. The design and plan of the work was not to produce systematic treatises, and still less to develop anything ultimate or absolute in method; but to gather together, in the form most likely to be of direct practical utility to teachers, and especially students and readers of history, generally, the opinions and modes of instruction, actual or ideal, of eminent and representative specialists in each department. The present volume has been an unremunerated work of love on the part of each writer, and the appearance of subsequent volumes in the series is not yet assured. It should be added that the articles arc printed in the order in which they were received by the editor. Teachers in whom a methodic interest has been awakened will find many useful hints in the following books, pamphlets, and articles: - Georg Goufried Gervinus. Gruudzuge der Historik. Leipzic, 1837. pp. 95. F. Jacobi. Grundzuge einer neuen Methode fur den vaterlandischen Geschichtsunterricht in deutschen Schulen. Nurnberg, 1839. Book Description
Excerpt from Method in History: For Teachers and Students To state the matter negatively, the aim has not been to discuss devices and external manipulations in teaching history; the term method is not even intended to suggest diagrams, chronological charts, or expedients of like nature. But something far more fundamental has been the aim: the determining factors in method and not the determined - the principal 'and not the accidental - ones have -been sought for and put to work at the problem. Whether diagrams, outlines, maps, and so on are to be, used in teaching history cannot be decided by the whim of the teacher or by some current fashion in teach ing the subject, but is to be decided, like other questions about devices and expedients, by an appeal to principles. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos This book has been written in the interest of better history teaching. It deals in most part with what might be denominated everyday classroom problems in the teaching of history in the upper-elementary and high-school grades, both junior and senior. The technic of teaching has received the chief emphasis in the majority of the chapters, and the general psychological, pedagogical, and historical phases of the subject, as well as the unsettled problem of what to teach, have been omitted. The idea back of the discussion throughout is that there is a technic of teaching history in the junior and senior high schools that can be mastered by a teacher and actually applied in directing the daily classroom activities, regardless of the content of the course. The writer fully realizes the dangers accompanying a discussion which attempts to be so practical and concrete as the one contained in the following pages purports to be. When one presents a history-recitation score card, a specific procedure for supervised study in history, a detailed outline of how to use a textbook, a definite scheme to attain progress within the subject, directions for writing a term paper, concrete examples of the problem-solving method in history, and a score or more of similar suggestions, one is likely to be met with the objection that the specific procedure proposed is by no means the best or the only one. The author's rejoinder to such an objection is that in no case has he done more than present a way of doing a specific thing. This definiteness in all probability will be more helpful to some teachers than to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Teaching of History in Elementary and Secondary Schools In beginning his illuminating treatment of the Holy Roman Empire, Lord Bryce wrote: "In history there is nothing isolated, and just as to explain a modern act of Parliament, or a modem conveyance of lands, we must go back to the feudal customs of the thirteenth century, so among the institutions of the Middle Ages there is scarcely one which can be understood until it is traced up either to classical or to primitive Teutonic antiquity." This is the first principle for the teacher of history to enforce, as it is the first lesson for the student of history to learn. History offers a third dimension to the superficial area of knowledge that each individual acquires through his own experience. When one boasts that he is not bound by any trammels of the past, he proclaims his own folly, and would, if he could, reduce himself to the intellectual level of the lower animals.
