Original sources have been consulted, whenever opportunity has presented itself. It gives me much pleasure to acknowledge the assistance ren dered by the United States Bureau of Education, in. For warding for examination a number of old text-books which otherwise would have been inaccessible to me. It should also be said that a large number of passages in this book are taken, with only slight alteration, from my History of Mathematics, Macmillan co., 1895. Some parts of the present work are, therefore, not independent of the earlier one. It has been my privilege to have my manuscript read by two scholars of well-known ability, - Dr. G. B. Halsted of the University of Texas, and Professor F. H. Loud of Colorado College. This general interest in the professional preparation of teachers for secondary education, which is thus being shown in many of our American colleges and universities, has led to a feeling on the part of a number of these institutions that teaching must be recognized as a profession, and that. Training for it must be as formal and definite as for law, medicine, or engineering. This has resulted in the establish ment at a number of our universities of schools of education, each with a formal organization and a separate faculty, these being con sidered as professional schools and as such ranking, in general, with the schools of law. Medicine, and engineering. 111 these schools attention has been given particularly to preparation for secondary teaching, as the various State normal schools have, in general, solved the problem of preparing teachers for the elementary schools. Of the various schools of education now existing in the United States the oldest are Teachers College of Columbia. University and the School of Pedagogy of New York University. Teachers Col lege was founded in 1888 as a privately endowed institution under the presidency of Nicholas Murray Butler, and was then known as the New York College for the Training of Teachers.
