Book Description
Initiated in the 1980s when Eric and Suzanne Syz were living in New York, The Syz Collection was installed in 2017 in Geneva -- where the couple has been based since the mid-1990s -- in the new Syz Group Headquarters, thus allowing an overarching view of it.Featuring 300 works by more than 100 Swiss and international artists from different generations, working in different mediums, the Geneva hanging reflects the tastes of an inspired collector couple, who have been advised for the last 10 years by curator and art critic Nicolas Trembley.Having started by collecting paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, and Andy Warhol, the Syzs have been endlessly expanding their collection, following the most renowned artists of our times, including Fischli/Weiss, Wade Guyton, Cindy Sherman, Sturtevant, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Rosemarie Trockel.They have been collecting while also always paying attention to the most powerful voices of the younger generations, such as Valentin Carron, Roe Ethridge, Yngve Holen, and Elad Lassry. The Syz's very open approach to collecting constitutes as such a vivid testimony to the current diversity of contemporary art practices.Edited and introduced by Nicolas Trembley, this publication offers an extensive documentation of the collection, focusing especially on the way it is displayed at the Syz Group Headquarters.This overview is completed by a conversation with Eric and Suzanne Syz and Nicolas Trembley by the Head of Cultural Service at Le Temps, Emmanuel Grandjean, as well as essays on the principles of the collection and the relationship between contemporary art and corporate culture, emphasizing the many ways artworks find their place in business offices.

Book Description
"Born in Zurich and educated in Paris, jewelry designer Suzanne Syz moved to New York City in the 1980s where she encountered legendary artists Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, and Jeff Koons. Her relationships with these creative spirits greatly influenced her impressive contemporary art collection, and acted as a catalyst for her unique jewelry designs. Frustrated that she couldn't find the jewelry she wanted, Syz began crafting her own pieces in the mid-1990s. Today, the Geneva-based designer boasts a client list including the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Glora von Thurn und Taxis, the Archduchess Francesca von Habsburg-Thyssen, and Michelle Yeoh. Inspired by nature, childhood fairy tales, art, and her extensive travels, her one-of-a-kind creations are infused with an unparalleled sense of whimsy, joy, and magic"--Publisher's web site.

Book Description
The study of provenance—the history of the creation and ownership of an artefact, work of art, or specimen—provides insights into the history of taste and collecting, illuminating the social, economic, and historic trends in which an object was created and collected. It is as much a history of people as it is of objects, and its study often reveals intricate networks of relationships, patterns of activity and motivations. This book promotes the study of the history of collecting and collections in all their variety through the lens of provenance, and explores the subject as a cross-disciplinary activity. Perhaps for the first time in a publication, it draws on expertise ranging from art history and anthropology, to natural history and law, looking at periods from antiquity through the 18th century and the Holocaust era to the present, and materials from Europe and the Americas to China and the Pacific. The issues raised are wide-ranging, touching on aspects of authenticity, cultural meaning and material transformation and economic and commercial drivers, as well as collector and object biography. The book fills a gap in the study of collecting and provenance, taking the subject holistically and from multiple standpoints, better to reflect the widening interest in provenance from a range of disciplinary perspectives. This book will be a service to the field, from established scholars and museum professionals to students of collecting history, cultural heritage, and museum studies.

Book Description
Since before the myth of Pygmalion bringing a statue to life through desire, artists have used sculpture to explore the physical materiality of the body. This groundbreaking volume examines key sculptural works from thirteenth-century Europe to the global present, revealing new insights into the strategies artists deploy to blur the distinction between art and life. Three-dimensional renderings of the human figure are presented here in numerous manifestations, created by artists ranging from Donatello and Edgar Degas to Kiki Smith and Jeff Koons. Featuring works created in media both traditional and unexpected—such as glass, leather, and blood—Like Life presents sculpture by turns conventional and shocking, including effigies, dolls, mannequins, automata, waxworks, and anatomical models. Texts by curators and cultural historians as well as contemporary artists complete this provocative exploration of realistic representations of the human body. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Book Description
While imported Chinese porcelain had become a valuable commodity in Europe in the seventeenth century, local attempts to produce porcelain long remained unsuccessful. At last the secret of hard-paste porcelain was uncovered, and in 1710 the first European porcelain was manufactured in Saxony. Meissen porcelain, still manufactured today, soon ranked in value with silver and gold. This thorough and lavishly illustrated volume explores the early years of Meissen porcelain and how the princes of Saxony came to use highly prized porcelain pieces as diplomatic gifts for presentation to foreign courts. An eminent team of international contributors examines the trade of Meissen with other nations, from England to Russia. They also investigate the cultural ambience of the Dresden Court, varying tastes of the markets, the wide range of porcelain objects, and their designers and makers. Individual chapters are devoted to gifts to Denmark, other German courts, the Holy Roman Empire, Italy, France, and other nations. For every Meissen collector or enthusiast, this book will be not only a treasured handbook but also a source of visual delight.
