Book Description
Excerpt from The Supremacy of Spirit IN November 1919 the Cambridge University Press published a book written by myself and entitled Spiritual Pluralism and Recent Phil osophy. Shortly afterwards it was suggested to me that I should attempt to write a less detailed and less technical account of my theories, which might perhaps be of some interest to a wider public than that consisting only of people concerned with philosophy professionally. After some hesitation I decided to make the attempt, and this book, the completion of which has been considerably delayed by pressure of other work, is the result. The greatest diffi culty with which the writer of a book such as this is faced, is the difficulty of making himself readily comprehensible to the general reader without sacrificing that logical and technical soundness apart from which he is helpless before his fellow philosophers, to whose attack the publication of any book of any kind may natur ally expose him. I have without doubt fallen between two stools on many occasions, and must beg for tolerance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Revelation of the Holy Spirit Goethe says wisely that the battle of faith and infidelity is the one momentous issue in human history; all other issues are subordinate to this. But faith in one point of religion facilitates faith in all religion. Truth is a whole, and every part of it is indissolubly linked to other parts. It is possible, then, that a plea for the doctrine of the Holy Spirit may possess some slight value in Christian Apolo getics. If it were so in the instance of this book, that would be my deepest joy, my best reward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Spirit of God Or unfold the Spirit who is beyond word and thought. In His name and glory I have only tried to describe His dealings with me, one of the humblest of mankind, that He may deal similarly with others to whom in the plenteousness of his grace God has given greater light, greater love, or greater holiness. May the spirit of God abide with the reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Catholic Spirit in Modern English Literature Modern literature is largely made up of deliberate, if somewhat ornate, pamphleteering. It is a great written debate between the exponents of different ways of living and looking upon life. Never before have solutions so divergent been offered to the riddle of human destiny and never have the protagonists been more belligerent. We all feel that the older English letters were concerned with an established point of view; that, while Spenser was an Anglican and Milton a Puritan, their human creed, their idea of man, was substantially the same. But the pressure of these latter days has lain heavily on every kind of art; and literature has been forced to voice the protest or the defense of a multitude of individuals deriving their strength from sources which have very little in common. In many ways the influence of this state of affairs has been evil and has led to recklessness and perversity in the statement of opinion, as well as to the abandonment by a large portion of the reading public of anything like standards, not only of judgment but even of taste. On the other hand, there are many who as a result of the modern upheaval have grown quite tired of eccentricity and faddishness; who are convinced as men otherwise circumstanced could scarcely be convinced, that some basic philosophy is needed to save art from ruinous futility. Book Description
The Bible has a way of shocking us. If Americans could still blush, we might blush at the words, "Rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love" (Proverbs 5:18-19). But, of course, sin always tries to trash God's gifts. So we can't just celebrate sex for what God made it to be; we have to fight what sin turned it into. The contributors to this unique volume encourage you to do both: celebrate and struggle. This book has something for all-men and women, married and single-from contributors like John Piper, C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney, Mark Dever, Al Mohler, Carolyn McCulley, and others.
