Book Description
Donald Morrill's essays take us to a variety of settings -- the American Midwest, Florida, China, Poland, Turkey, Egypt, Russia, France, Tibet, Mexico. Through compelling stories lyrically told, Morrill examines homelife and the wandering life, as his travels bring him encounters with a goddess, a president, racecar drivers and runaway teenagers, public relations executives, beggars and boors, artists and gropers, a Nobel laureate, human wrecks, a mad philatelist. Along the way, he probes issues of family and coming of age, of living abroad with other foreigners, of substance abuse, money and the imagination, culture shock, lust, vanished friendship, American notions of failure, the fugitive soul, marriage and divorce, fatherhood, and of the comforts and confines of staying put. Whether crossing a border or crossing a room, Morrill engages the matter at hand with a poet's eye and a passion for the texture of experience.

Inside the King, through the glittering streams of his blood, there were three miracles sleeping together, and they were very small, and they each had a little face, and little arms, and little hands, and little legs, and little feet, and as they breathed slowly in, and out, they each made a beating sound, and these three little things, pleasantly dreaming away, were none other than the King’s Hearts. In a miraculous world of angels and gods, a young woman from London becomes a hero as she helps the angels in an ancient war between good and evil that has been ongoing since the dawn of time.

Book Description
This edited volume examines mobile phone use in China. Unlike most studies on ICT development in China this book argues for the importance of the cultural realm as captured in mobile phone usage in reflecting the normative basis and struggle of the people. It stresses how the mobile phone is in fact an important means by which one can understand a rapidly changing China. A key concern of the book is to assert the uniqueness of China’s experience in mobile phone usage. This uniqueness is encapsulated by the phrase ‘riding the double juggernaut’, in that Chinese society is exposed to a rapid process of industrialization and cyberization in a short period of time. The contributors maintain that such density of experience under a compressed period when the society has a thick cultural heritage of its own and yet is still under a dictating rule all come together to provide a unique situation in China. .
