Book Description
Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Book Description
Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. Book Description
Excerpt from Good Indian T was somewhere in the seventies when old Peaceful Hart woke to a realization that gold-hunting and Iumbago do not take kindly to one another, and the fact that his pipe and dim-eyed meditation appealed to him more keenly than did his prospector's pick and shovel and pan seemed to imply that he was growing old. He was a silent man, by occupation and by nature, so he said nothing about it; but, like the wild things of prairie and wood, instinctively began preparing for the winter of his life. Where he had lately been wash ing tentatively the sand along Snake River, he built a ranch. His prospector's tools he used in digging ditches to irrigate his new-made meadows, and his mining days he lived over again only in halting recital to his sons when they clamored for details of the old days when the Indians were not mere untidy neighbors to be gos siped with and fed, but enemies to be fought, upon occasion. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of India The story Of India is that of a land quite different from any other in the British Empire. Its population Of three hundred millions is immensely larger than any that a European power has undertaken to rule elsewhere, and it confronts us with problems more stubborn than any we have to solve in America, Australasia, or even Africa. It cannot compete with Canada or Australia in actual size Of territory; still, it is thirty times as large as England, and larger than the continent of Europe without Russia. Its general outline on the map is familiar enough, a great triangle pointing southward into the Indian Ocean, and northward a huge dome shaped mass rising high into Central Asia. Every variety Of climate is to be found in India; for her million and a half Of square miles in clude every height Of land, from the level Of the sea to the tallest mountain peaks on the surface of the globe. There is plenty Of variety among the people, too. Those of the north-west and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
