Book Description
Prior to WWII when the Romanian monarchy modernized the nation, Romania became one of the richest countries in Europe. During that time, my family was a part of privileged intellectuals and land owners. After 1939, Romania was subjected to Fascism against her will, and after 1945, the country came under Communist rule. All of us were reduced to poverty. I have witnessed how the Communist regime marginalized people and suppressed individual liberty, private initiative, lack of opportunities, and hope. I used the course of my life and decided to write its story for the purpose of showing others what an unsuccessful, socialist, Marxist government means. When it came to power, the State seized the fruits and the bounty it found, however, without producing anything on its own, except thousands of deaths and political prisoners. This is my story under a Communist regime when I lost my liberty.

History of My Life
Author: Giacomo Chevalier de Seingalt Casanova
Publisher: Johns Hopkins University Press
ISBN: 9780801856648
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Award-winning translation of the complete memoirs of Casanova available for the first time in paperback. In volumes 5 and 6, Casanova brings his flight from the Inquisitor's prison in Venice to a happy conclusion. Exiled from Venice, he goes to Munich and Paris, where he establishes himself as a cabalist, makes a fortune in Holland, helps start the French State Lottery, goes on to Switzerland where he meets Voltaire. Because every previous edition of Casanova's Memoirs had been abridged to suppress the author's political and religious views and tame his vivid, often racy, style, the literary world considered it a major event when Willard R. Trask's translation of the complete original text was published in six double volumes between 1966 and 1971. Trask's award-winning translation now appears in paperback for the first time.

American Jennie: The Remarkable Life of Lady Randolph Churchill
Author: Anne Sebba
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393079686
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 415
Book Description
A frank account of the tempestuous life of the American mother of Britain’s most important twentieth-century politician. Brooklyn-born Jennie Jerome married into the British aristocracy in 1874, after a three-day romance. She became Lady Randolph Churchill, wife of a maverick politician and mother of the most famous British statesman of the century. Jennie Churchill was not merely the most talked about and controversial American woman in London society, she was a dynamic behind-the-scenes political force and a woman of sexual fearlessness at a time when women were not supposed to be sexually liberated. A concert pianist, magazine founder and editor, and playwright, she was also, above all, a devoted mother to Winston. In American Jennie, Anne Sebba draws on newly discovered personal correspondences and archives to examine the unusually powerful mutual infatuation between Jennie and her son and to relate the passionate and ultimately tragic career of the woman whom Winston described as having “the wine of life in her veins.”

Sir Garnet Wolseley
Author: Stephen Manning
Publisher: Pen and Sword Military
ISBN: 1399072471
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Field Marshal Lord Wolseley was an eminent Victorian, one of a handful of late nineteenth-century military men whose reputation transcends his age. He served the British empire in Burma, India, China, the Crimea, Canada, Asante, Egypt, South Africa and the Sudan. He excelled as a regimental soldier, staff officer, army commander and reformer and eventually commander-in-chief. Yet there has been no substantial work on Wolseley for a generation and a reassessment based upon a fresh look at the man and his achievements is long overdue. That is why Stephen Mannings perceptive military biography, which sets Wolseley firmly in the context of his period and seeks to strip away the legend that developed during his lifetime, is so timely and important. Each of Wolseleys campaigns is examined in vivid detail and there are graphic descriptions of the major battles in which he took part, either as an officer or a general. His performance as a commander, from his great success during the expedition against the Asante to his failure to rescue Gordon from Khartoum, is critically assessed to see if he deserves his brilliant reputation. His efforts as an army reformer are examined too, in particular whether he could have done more to prepare Britain for war against the Boers. Stephen Mannings incisive account of Wolseleys career will be fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in the British army in the nineteenth century, in colonial warfare and in the exploits of one of Queen Victorias most admired generals.
