Book Description
C.F. Tietgen and the Great Northern Telegraph Company made history when they set up telegraph cables in China and Japan in 1870-1871 and thus connected the two countries with the rest of the world through the worldwide communication network. Soon transatlantic submarine cables across the Pacific Ocean and North Atlantic Ocean followed. The book unfolds the history of Tietgen's company through the 19th and 20th century with rivals, revolutions, and civil wars in China and Russia, conflicts and wars in the Pacific Ocean and East Asia, the terror during Stalin's reign, and not least two world wars and the Cold War up until today's globalized and digitalized world. The story moves through government offices and imperial chambers in China, Russia, Japan, and UK, the construction of telegraph lines in Chinese paddy fields, and cable-laying in unknown waters, travels on horseback through the impassable Siberia, and seminal decisions in contemporary boardrooms. After the Second World War, GN Store Nord had to reinvent itself several times. The subsidiary STORNO became one of the world's biggest manufacturers of mobile phones, and the telecommunication company Sonofon was the first to challenge the state monopoly on telephony and network traffic in Denmark. For 150 years there has been numerous crises and downturns of which several have threatened the existence of GN Store Nord. The company recovered every time, and today GN Group - made up of GN Hearing and GN Audio - is a global leader in hearing aid technology and headsets. The book is based on archival research in Denmark, Russia, UK, and China.

The Understanding of Adultery in the Hebrew Bible
Author: Alexander Izuchukwu Abasili
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1514498502
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
Adultery, though not an umbrella concept for all the sexual prohibitions in the Hebrew Bible, enjoys a certain pride of place. Remarkably, it is the one sexual prohibition attested in all biblical genres, which makes it very representative in the Hebrew Bible. It is the only Hebrew biblical sexual prohibition explicitly mentioned in the Decalogue. A solid understanding of Hebrew biblical adultery, therefore, is an important step towards grasping the vital role of human sexuality in the Hebrew Bible, both in terms of inter-human relationships and the relationship between the human and the divine. Without prejudice to the contents of the Hebrew biblical lexicons and theological dictionaries, this work aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of adultery in the Hebrew Bible: its meaning, punishments and the implications thereof. Among others, it corrects some wrong assumptions about the concept of adultery in the Hebrew Bible, and provides a balanced and unbiased Hebrew biblical conception of adultery and the implications thereof for todays couples.

Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
2020 Aesop Accolade Award J. Torres and Elbert Or celebrate 10 years of Lola: A Ghost Story, the critically-acclaimed graphic novel that explores family, grief and Filipino folklore in an all-new edition that includes a revised ending and updated illustrations. Jesse didn’t really know his Lola (the Tagalog word for grandmother), but he remembers that she tried to drown him as a baby. Strange stories surround Lola: she had visions, she fought off monsters straight out of Filipino folklore, and, according to some, she may have even seen ghosts. Now Jesse is struggling with the same visions Lola had, but Lola's not around anymore, and the rest of his family are too tied up in their own personal demons to help. Personal demons that Lola might have helped with, if she were still alive. As Jesse explores his new abilities, he realizes that he might be the one who needs to step into that role—and that helping others might just help him, too.
