Book Description
The Steam Engine: A Practical Guide to the Construction, Operation, and Care of Steam Engines, Steam Turbines, and Their Accessories - Volume One is a work originally published by The American School of Correspondence and co-authored by Walter B. Snow and Walter S. Leland. The intent of the book is to introduce the great advances in steam power to the masses through a detailed but introductory description of a modern technology (at the time of writing) that would impact the lives of many. The Steam Engine is primarily intended for the enthusiast interested in steam power. The book begins with a detailed description of the steam engine, including the history of its development, a thorough examination of important engine parts, and an overview of the different types of steam engine. From there, the book progresses into a more focused discussion of engine operation and engine room accessories, including a vital section highlighting the importance of lubrication. The thermodynamics of the steam engine are then outlined, in what is probably the densest portion of the book. The text concludes with a look at the steam turbine, primarily focusing on its operation. The language included throughout is basic. The authors have intentionally excluded complicated mathematical theories in order to make this book approachable for the non-specialist. While some technical knowledge is certainly beneficial to reader's of The Steam Engine, one need not be an engineer in order to understand the principles discussed. As a practical guide to a complex technology, The Steam Engine is a great success. Enthusiasts will surely delight in the depth of information contained within this book, all of it presented in an easy to digest fashion. If you are at all interested in steam power, Snow and Leland's book is sure to please. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Steam-Engine and Other Steam-Motors, Vol. 1 of 2: A Text-Book for Engineering Colleges and a Treatise for Engineers; The Thermodynamics and the Mechanics of the Engine This work is mainly descriptive and analytical, developing and illustrating principles and establishing methods for solving the various problems which arise in connection with the working of the engine. The writer has planned a subsequent treatise, on the Performance and Design of the Engine: this will take up the quantitative and synthetical side of the subject, giving the digested results of a large number of tests, now available in works of refer ence; setting forth methods of engine-testing; and developing, as far as practicable, a logical scheme of design, especially of the thermodynamic design of the engine. This is several times re ferred to, in the text, as Part II. (of a complete treatise). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Steam-Engine and Other Steam-Motors, Vol. 1 of 2: A Text-Book for Engineering Colleges and a Treatise for Engineers; The Thermodynamics and the Mechanics of the Engine The objects of this book are, to set forth clearly the fundamental principles of the steam-engine, to give a broad description t of constructive practice, to explain fully the working of the machine in its several departments, and to show how to find its efficiency in performance. Manner of presentation and order in development of the subject have been strongly influenced by the fact that it is intended to be a text-book for the use of students: but with this has gone the purpose of making it a complete engineering treatise, in which the theory of the steam.machine shall be put into a shape convenient of practical application, and which, on the descriptive side, shall lay a solid foundation for the more special and detailed information which must be gained from experience and from the technical press. As to the manner of presentation, it is assumed that the reader knows at least a few general facts about the engine, and has had a good preparation in mathematics, physics, and mechanics; but all physical and mechanical deductions arc built up, in concise form, from basal principles, in order that the book may be, on this side, as nearly self-contained as possible. The more elementary subjects carry full explanations, many examples being given to impress and elucidate principles; but the advanced discussions are more concisely stated. Graphical methods are very generally used, as easier and clearer than algebraic. The first volume is devoted to the Thermodynamics and the Mechanics of the engine, a sufficient foundation of practical knowledge being laid in the introductory chapter, which formulates general ideas and describes, in simple terms, the working of the engine. The fuller exposition of form and construction, at the beginning of volume two, is made to follow this development of fundamental principles, in order that the reasons underlying different types of design may be better understood.
