Book Description
Excerpt from The Spectroscope in Medicine The Spectroscope seems likely to be of almost as great use in Medicine as it has already proved in terrestrial, solar, and stellar Chemistry. Hitherto the great hindrances to its use have been erroneous ideas as to the difficulties which seem to surround this method of investigation; such ideas having arisen from want of a simple treatise on the in strument and its applications to Physiology and Pathology. In the following pages such information will be found, and the publication of this little book will, I trust, lead to a more extended use of the spectroscope, which has already done good work in Physiology and Pathology, and has corrected many erroneous ideas regarding various animal pigments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from The Use of the Spectroscope in Its Application to Scientific and Practical Medicine The principal part of the Spectroscope (that by which the decomposition of light is effected) is either a grating or a prism. We shall confine ourselves to the discussion of the prism, which has led to such extensive discoveries; though it must be conceded that it is only by means. Of the diffraction-grating that a truly normal spectrum can be obtained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Spectroscope and Its Work To any one, who takes up this primer with the hope of getting to know something of the work of the spectroscope, I would point out that it is at best an attempt to describe some of the elements of a subject wherein the guiding phenomena are wonderfully beautiful, but also complicated in spite of their seeming simplicity. In such a case verbal descriptions may be misleading. I am almost tempted to strike out the reiterated title printed on every other page and to substitute the words "Study the phenomena themselves." The book will have missed its point, if it does not stir up the reader to wish to see for himself. To those who use the book as a help in teaching, I should be grateful for all hints that would tend to remove error and obscurity from it and make it more serviceable for their purpose. I wish to express my obligations to the Royal Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, Sir Norman Lockyer, Major E. H. Hills, Professor G. E. Hale, Professor E. E. Barnard, and the editors of the Astrophysical Journal, for permission to reproduce plates in illustration of the subject. These plates will be found at the end of the book. Professor A. M. Worthington has rendered me great help by suggestions made after reading the proof sheets of all the earlier chapters of the book. I am glad to have this opportunity of thanking him.
