Dans la première partie sont interrogés successivement les poèmes de Erza Pound, Theodore Roethke, Denise Levertov, Adrienne Rich, Muriel Rukeyser; les romans de Henry James et ceux de Dashiell Hammet; la production picturale des Hyperréalistes.
