Moreover, the work of a Russian writing in English is greatly embarrassed by the consciousness of the fact that the Russian char acter and Russian history are little familiar on this side of the Atlantic. Under such circumstances, the present work can be only a review of the great movement in its most significant manifestations, and an attempt to convey to the American reader a better understanding of the character, the motives and the aspirations of the various parts of the Russian nation engaged in the revolution.
