Book Description
Excerpt from Song of the Prairie Land: And Other Poems I first met Wilson MacDonald in 1911. I had come across a remarkable poem, "The Shame of Goderich," of considerable length, in a country paper. I was impressed with its power, its gift of expression, its originality, its humanitarianism. It seemed to be the shame of Toronto that it should not be more widely known. Of course there was difficulty in getting it into a Toronto paper. Its length was against it. So was its quality. Newspapers will print doggerel by the yard, but as a rule their columns are closed to good poetry. However, "The Shame of Goderich" duly appeared, signed "Frederick Maclean." One day subsequently a dark romantic figure appeared at my office door. I thought at once of Kyrle Bellew in the Apothecary scene in "Romeo and Juliet," the only actor I ever saw do it justice. Here was the same slight, lithe, graceful Italian figure, the same dark eyes and olive complexion, the same strange inscrutable smile of the shy but friendly soul. "I am Wilson MacDonald," spoke the stranger. That conveyed nothing. "Yes?" was the non-commital editorial response. "I am Frederick Maclean," was the further venture, and after that the fountains of the great deep were unloosed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Song of the Exile: A Canadian Epic The summer months were passed in tortured bliss. My love had grown, but that it could not grow; It all-enveloped me, and one sweet kiss F rom her dear lips had made my bosom glow With happiness and many months of pain Had been as nothing, that one kiss to gain. And, when the many-tinted Autumn's reign Succeeded Summer's more congenial sway, I told her of the mingled joy and pain That stirred my soul throughout each Summer's day. And whispered, in emotion's softest tone, The love that I had feared before to own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of the Rising Nation: And Other Poems Ah! Young, or middle-aged, or old - what then Love is the same bright ignis-fatuus ever That plays the mischief with the hearts of men, And women too, dark-bair'd or grey. There never Can come a time when that delusive light Shall lose its charm to lure - its power to blight. Old land of mine! Say, shall I sing thy wrongs? Alas! What need? Doth not thy misery Breathe in the murmurs of a thousand songs A ceaseless flood of mournful melody While nobler muses tell the grievous tale, Mine can but weep the woes of Innisfail! Religion - but my pen's not smooth enough It could not treat the subject as it ought. 'tis an old crabbed pen, rusty and rough, And stops, and trips at every pretty thought, And slurs this word, and Sputters that - and so, Religion must not be my subject. No!
