Excerpt from Towards a Christian Sociology IF the position be granted that is assumed by nearly all reformers, that the salvation of society involves among other things its reorganisation on some corporate or co-operative basis, there are two ways in which the problem of reconstruction may be approached. The first of these is the Christian one which, taking its stand on the permanent needs of human nature, assumes the existence of a type of society which may be designated as the normal, because it most perfectly satisfies human needs, and therefore directs its policy towards the recovery and strengthening of everything in life and society that is to be regarded as normal. The other, which is the Socialist one, is altogether destitute of any conception of normality, since, apart from the elementary needs of food, Clothing, and shelter, it treats other human needs as non-essentials, subject to Change and flux. It takes its stand on the supposed truth of a theory of social evolution according to which all social phenomena are to be regarded as relative, and human. Excerpt from Social Aspects of Christianity The Sermons in the present volume were preached (with two exceptions) during my residence at Westminster in August and December, 1886. I have indeed endeavoured to enforce the main ideas which they contain at various times during the last thirty years; but the opportunity seemed to require that I should endeavour to bring, as far as I could, into a clear and connected form what had been spoken only fragmentarily before. No one indeed can tell what is the effect which 'the Abbey' and the vast congregations which gather there, eager to listen, produce upon one who first experiences it at the close of life. The general principles of social well-being and the true spirit of Christianity lead us back to the teachings of Christ. Hitherto we have possessed no Catholic work in English on the precise subject of the social import of the Gospel; and since correct views upon this particular matter are necessary for those engaged in social work, Miss E. Willson accepted the task of translating the volume of M. Leon Garriguet entitled La Valeur Sociale de l'Evangile. The scope of this work is confined to the teachings of the Gospel, the teaching of the Apostolic writings being merely incidentally referred to. Neither does the author deal in any way with the motives or spirit of Christian charity. The purpose of the book is to state the position taken up by Christ on the general questions of wealth, poverty, property, community of goods, socialism and economic progress. It may be here mentioned that quotations have been taken either from the English originals of works referred to, or from English translations of other works, whenever such exist.
