Book Description
Jack McCormac delivers his signature wit in a new Sketching Detective mystery. This time, Jack McKay and his wife Fiona are headed to Edisto Island, South Carolina. As always, mystery and murder follow them to the delightful beach community. Jack has the strong opinion that the Edisto Beach officials should place the following sign at the entrance to the island. WARNING DANGER The United States Government warns people visiting this area of the danger of theft. This island may very well steal your heart. Soon after their arrival in Edisto Island, Jack and Fiona read about the deathbed confession of a bank robber in the newspaper. The thief held up the First Universe Bank in Charleston a year before and got away with 110,000 dollars. The problem was, the bank claimed that they had lost 600,000 dollars from that robbery. The bank auditors had confirmed that the bank was short the larger amount, but the missing 490,000 put Charleston in an uproar. A few days later, Jack and Fiona stumble over a murdered woman on the beach, buried under a sand castle with a flounder gig stuck in her back. With the permission of the local police, Fiona rushes headlong into the mystery, dragging a reluctant Jack behind her. The victim is identified as Bobbie Mainwaring because of a missing persons report filed later that day. John Mainwaring, her husband, travels to Edisto to claim the body only to find out that the dead woman is not his wife. So, who was the murder victim? And where is Bobbie? The two cases are soon connected through Bobbie and her past. Between performing the Edisto crouch and practicing the geechee language, Jack and Fiona struggle to solve a year old robbery and the murder of someone who might have known too much.

Book Description
A Glasgow bank heist turns into an unlikely meet-cute for a disgruntled female cop in this hilarious crime novel by the master of tartan noir. Their eyes met across a crowded room. It was a room crowded with hostages and armed bank-robbers, and Zal’s eyes were the only part of him that Angelique could see behind his mask. Officer Angelique de Xavia already had enough to be upset about before she’s taken hostage by the most bizarrely unorthodox crooks ever to set foot in Glasgow. Disillusioned, disaffected and chronically single, she’s starting to take stock of the sacrifices she’s made for a job that’s given her back nothing but grief. So when her erstwhile captor has the chutzpah to phone her at work and ask her out on a date, Angelique finds herself in no great hurry to turn him in. She’s long since learned that the cops will never love her back. But maybe one of the robbers will.

Book Description
In English and American cultures, detective fiction has a long and illustrious history. Its origins can be traced back to major developments in Anglo-American law, like the concept of circumstantial evidence and the rise of lawyers as heroic figures. Edgar Allen Poe's writings further fueled this cultural phenomenon, with the use of enigmas and conundrums in his detective stories, as well as the hunt-and-chase action of early police detective novels. Poe was only one staple of the genre, with detective fiction contributing to a thriving literary market that later influenced Arthur Conan Doyle's work. This text examines the emergence of short detective fiction in the nineteenth century, as well as the appearance of detectives in Victorian novels. It explores how the genre has captivated readers for centuries, with the chapters providing a framework for a more complete understanding of nineteenth-century detective fiction.

Book Description
Sweeping and fast-paced, Hot Art is a major work of investigative journalism and a thrilling joyride into a mysterious criminal world. Hot Art traces Joshua Knelman’s five-year immersion in the shadowy world of art theft, where he uncovers a devious game that takes him from Egypt to Los Angeles, New York to London, and back again, through a web of deceit, violence, and corruption. With a cool, knowing eye, Knelman delves into the lives of professionals such as Paul, a brilliant working-class kid who charmed his way into a thriving career organizing art thefts and running loot across the United Kingdom and beyond, and LAPD detective Donald Hrycyk, one of the few special investigators worldwide who struggle to keep pace with the evolving industry of stolen art. As he becomes more and more immersed in this world, Knelman learns that art theft is no fringe activity—it has evolved into one of the largest black markets in the world, which even Interpol and the FBI admit they cannot contain. In this battle, the thieves are winning. Sweeping and fast-paced, Hot Art is a major work of investigative journalism and a thrilling joyride into a mysterious criminal world.
