Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Ship Production The purpose of this book is to present in convenient form the most important general principles of ship design, with which every naval architect should be familiar, and to describe the various processes in connection with the building of ships. Its nature is intended to be practical rather than theoretical, it being assumed that the principal problem with which the reader is concerned is the quick production of seagoing vessels from plans already in exist ence rather than the preparation of new plans. The recent unprecedented increase in shipbuilding in the United States has resulted in a corresponding demand for workmen, draftsmen, and naval architects. It has there fore become necessary for many engineers and technical men, who have never before been confronted with ship building problems, to transfer their activities from the fields of the various other engineering professions to those of the marine engineer and naval architect. These men are fa miliar with mechanical processes and have the necessary groundwork in theoretical and applied mathematics to fit them for duties in connection with the production of ships, but lack familiarity with those matters that are peculiar to shipbuilding. It is hoped that this book may aid in furnishing, in compact form, some of the more essen tial parts of this information. It should also be of value to workmen in shipyards who have only such knowledge of the shipbuilding industry as they have gained from practical experience, and who desire to fit themselves for higher positions. Book Description
Excerpt from Cost Accounting in Shipbuilding In the preliminary statement on uniform cost meth ods for shipbuilders which was submitted on November 1, 1918, through the courtesy of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, there is included an outline of the needs and advantages Of uniform cost methods in the ship building industry. These benefits have been considered in the development of the principles and methods which are set up in this report. Shipbuilders and business men in general fully recog nize the value of accurate cost statistics as a means Of establishing standards for estimating and for comparing operating efficiencies, and for providing proper bases Of production costs and selling prices. The need for and advantages of uniform cost methods in the shipbuilding industry are intensified when the va ried activities and output Of shipyards and the possibili ties for incomplete figuring Of costs and losses in pro duction are considered. While it is possible, it is not essential for purposes Of comparison for the uniform cost methods to furnish scientifically accurate figures. The main Obj ect and the important advantage Of the use Of uniform methods is that all costs will be included and figured in the same way. Book Description
Excerpt from The Question of Ships: The Navy and the Merchant Marine It is a curious fact that a great commercial question, vital in its influence upon the well-being of an eminently practical nation, should so often be approached upon the side of sentiment. A bewildering maze of statistics, an array of accommodating figures, and a dexterous spinning of subtle phrases, are made to form the premises, not of an irrefutable conclusion, but of an appeal, which fires the heart, if it do not satisfy the head, of many a patriot. To discuss a question so sober, so melancholy as the restoration of the Merchant Marine, from the standpoint of its poetical merits, is not a priori convincing of its imminent necessity; and, whether an advocate shines in the broad light-beam of free-trade, or is glorious in the panoply of protection, he should forswear heroics and pleas ad hominem, and treat the subject from the grossly material vantage-ground of dollars and cents. Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of Practical Shipbuilding: With a Glossary of Terms Practical shipbuilding deals primarily with Ship building, i.e., the work on and around the shipways. The allied trades in the shops (machine, pattern, joiner, black smith, etc.) are distinctly separate trades, as they are also employed in many other kinds of commercial enterprises. Therefore the details of that work do not interest the reader of this volume, rather, only the work which specially per tains to ship construction. The first edition has been thoroughly overhauled. N o repairs were made, but considerable was done in the way of additional information under some of the former chapters and new material has been added in the form of Chapters XII and XV. Shipbuilding is an extensive industry and the more one knows of the immense amount of detail in it, the more one realizes that such is really the case. It is impossible to go into details in a volume of this size, therefore it is the endeavor of the writer to deal only with those everyday things which the men on the shipways should know. In building a small book of this kind it is more difficult to know what to leave out than it is to know what to put in it. It is like a camouļ¬‚aged ship, the viewpoint is differ ent, according to each person who looks at it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
