A Sketch of the Life of Captain John Savage, J.P., First Settler in Shefford County, 1792 ; Also The Early History of St. John's Church, West Shefford, Que., 1821-1921
Author: Mary Olive Vaudry

Pages : 20
Book Description
John Savage Sr. (1740-1826) immigrated from northern Ireland to land near New Concord and Spencertown and the Hudson River in New York. He married Ann Pratt and, when the Revolutionary War began, both the Savage and the Pratt families were split among those for and against the Revolution. Captain John and his wife supported the British Army and he served with them until his capture and imprisonment between 1777 and 1782. After his release, he and his family immigrated to land near Lake Champlain, and in 1792 moved to land in Shefford County, Quebec, where they were joined by other United Empire Loyalists. The town of West Sheffort was eventually created, and St. John's Church (Episcopalian) was established. All new settlers had to take the oath of allegiance, and among Capt. Savage's papers was a list of names taking this oath between 1795 and 1818 (the name of Edward Roberts from Ireland does not appear on the list, as he came later in 1822). During the War of 1812, Capt. Savage was in command of the local militia; a list of the officers and enlisted men serving in the militia is enclosed.
