Excerpt from Sabbath or Lord's Day?: Which? Some have been heard to say, however, that the Sabbath has been changed from the seventh to the first day of the week. But the Bible does not know anything of any such a change. N o inspired man ever called the first day of the week the Sab bath. It was centuries after the last apostle was dead before men began to Speak of keeping the Sabbath by observing the first day. It will be said, however, that the Sabbath, as required of the Israelite, could not be observed in cold climates, and hence the rigor of the law must necessarily have been somewhat abated. But if any such necessity has existed, He who gave the law has surely known it quite as well as any of His creatures, and has therefore, somewhere in His word, removed the severities of the law, or, He has not intended it to be regarded in these cold cli mates. But if it was not intended for these northern countries then it was not meant to be universal. Hence all that may be legitimately argued from the fact of a needed change in the severities of the fourth command, is that it was not intended for persons living in cold climates. N 0 one can change a law in any feature, except He who gave it. And if God had made any such a change, such amending enactment could be found somewhere in the Bible. I speak to you, Protestants, and ask you if you have any given rule to know what sin is? Have you any certain rule to know whether Roman Catholics sin, or not, in bowing down to images? They say they do not sin! You say you know they do sin! But how do you know it is sin to bow down to images when they say it is not sin? Ans. By the law, you say, you know this is sin, and you know it by no other rule; for you had not known sin but by the law. 'nell, by the same rule, I know what sin is. You say it is not sin to work and do common labor on the seventh day. But we know not by your assertion, but by the law, whether you sin or not. You say you know by the law that it is sin to bow down to images. I say, (by your own rule, ) I know by the law, that it is sin to do common labor on the seventh day; and you can not deny it! And if you know it is the duty of Roman Catholics to repent of their sins for trans gressing the second command; then I know it is also your duty to repent of your sins for transgressing the fourth command. He that said thou shalt not kill - thou shalt not steal thou shalt not bow down to images, neither serve them, tire, also said, The sev cuth day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.
