Book Description
Excerpt from The Romance of Western Canada As President of the Lord Selkirk Association, I represent a Society, the principal object of which is to keep green and vivid the memory of the intrepid band of pioneers from Scotland who came out at the beginning of the last century and settled upon the banks of the Red River of the North, near where the City of Winnipeg now stands. No nobler or more indomitable contingent of colonists ever crossed the seas to carve out for themselves homes in a new and far-distant land than were the men, and the women, too, who comprised the various groups brought out by Lord Selkirk at that time. It is only necessary to read the history of the first few years of the Settlement to realize the unspeakably severe trials and difficulties which they were called upon to encounter - difficulties from fire and flood, and grasshoppers and conflicts between rival Trading Companies. The wonder is that they did not pull up stakes, abandon the place and seek better conditions elsewhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Place and Replace is a collection of recent interdisciplinary research into Western Canada that calls attention to the multiple political, social, and cultural labours performed by the concept of “place.” The book continues a long-standing tradition of situating questions of place at the centre of analyses of Western Canada’s cultures, pasts, and politics, while making clear that place is never stable, universal, or static. The essays here confirm the interests and priorities of Western Canadian scholarship that have emerged over the past forty years and remind us of the importance of Indigenous peoples, dispossession, and colonialism; of migration, race and ethnicity; of gender and women’s experiences; of the impact of the natural and built environment; and the impact of politics and the state.

Book Description
Excerpt from Where the Buffalo Roamed the Story of Western Canada Told for the Young A request has come to me from the Publisher to write an introduction to Miss Marsh's book, "Where the Buffalo Roamed." The title of the book leads one to expect large elements of romance, pathos and tragedy, and this expectation will not be disappointed. We have here the history of the Great New West of Canada, in the form of a series of sketches. They begin with the fascinating chapter which describes the country when it was a land primeval in which there lived in solitary grandeur the lordly Indian - "Free as when Nature first made man, Ere the base laws of servitude began." With the Indian, in a sort of comradeship, there dwelt in that land the buffalo and the deer, and all the tribes of the animal world whose haunts had not yet been broken into by the crack of the white man's rifle, and whose lives were not spent in constant effort to elude the cruelty of men who hunt the innocent for sport. Here and there throughout the book we find touches that reveal to us the lover of nature and the friend of the dumb creatures of God.
