Book Description
Antar is no imaginary personage. He was the son of an Arab prince of the tribe of Abs, by a black woman, whom his father had made captive in a predatory excursion: and he raised himself by the heroic qualities which he displayed from his earliest youth, and by his extraordinary genius for poetry, from the state of slavery in which he was born, to the confidence of his king, and to a preeminence above all the Chiefs of Arabia. He flourished during the close of the sixth, and the early part of the seventh century, of the pre-Islamic era; there is, consequently, little or no allusion to the customs or institutions of Islamism throughout the work; though the Hero is frequently designated as "He by whom God organized the earth and the world for the appearance of the Lord of slaves." The following Romance, as it may be called, was first put together, probably from traditionary tales current at the time, by Osmay, one of the eminent scholars, who adorned the courts of Haroun-al-Raschid, and of his two learned successors, Al-Amyn, and Al-Mamoun; and it still continues to be the principal source whence the story-tellers of the coffee-houses in Egypt, Syria, and Arabia, draw their most interesting tales.

Book Description
Antarah ibn Shaddad (AD 525-608), also known as Antar, was a pre-Islamic Arab knight and poet, famous for both his poetry and his adventurous life. His chief poem forms part of the Muallaqat, the collection of seven odes legendarily said to have been suspended in the Kaaba in Mecca. The account of his life forms the basis of a long and extravagant romance, a work that was long handed down by oral tradition only and is still recited by traditional story-tellers in Arab coffee-houses. This partial translation was made by the Oriental Secretary to the British Embassy at Constantinople and published in England in 1819.

Book Description
The early Arabian "Romance of Antar" is the greatest, and even today the most popular of the hero stories of the ancient days of Arabia, the days before the coming of Mohammed. The story of Antar is better authenticated than that of the heroes of the ""Iliad", since the great poet and warrior Antarah ibn Shaddad is a historical figure, and many of his poems have survived. These hero-legends have clustered about his name and take the form of heroic exploits and tales of pure invention

Book Description
IT is generally believed that this celebrated Arabian Romance was composed, in the eighth century, from traditionary tales which had been long current in the East, by El-Asma'ee, a famous philologist and poet at the court of Haroon Er-Rasheed. Other authors and sources (for instance, Johainah and Abu Obeidah) are mentioned in the work, but these, according to Von Hammer, have been inserted by story-tellers in the coffeehouses. Lane, in his admirable work on the Modern Egyptians, remarks that the 'Ulama (learned men) 'in general despise the romance, and ridicule the assertion that El-Asma'ee was its author': their opinion, however, on a question of this kind, is of little value. The complete work is usually bound up in forty-five volumes of various sizes-presenting a mass sufficient to appal the most indefatigable of translators; not to speak of the impossibility of finding European readers who would wade through the translation, if published. An abridged copy of this voluminous work, done by some learned Syrians (and hence called the Shamiyeh, or Syrian Antar, to distinguish it from the original, which was known as the Hijaziyeh, or Arabian Antar), having been obtained by Mr Terrick Hamilton, during his residence at Constantinople, in his capacity of Oriental Secretary to the British Embassy there, he was induced by its comparative brevity to undertake the task of translating it into English.
