Book Description
Around the end of the 19th century Arabs were becoming increasingly aware of their position as a weak, fragmented and occupied nation. While most Arab countries were considered part of the Ottoman Empire, almost all of them were at the time subject to European colonial rule or political influence and economic dominance. During the World Wide I, Arabs had a chance to launch a revolt against Turkey in support of the Allies war effort in exchange for a promise from Britain to help them gain independence. The Arab League, officially called the League of Arab States, is a regional organization of Arab states in Southwest Asia and North and Northeast Africa. It was formed in Cairo on March 22, 1945 with six members: Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Later, during the 1960s and 70s, many other Arab states joined the organization.
