"There are opportunities for environmental graphic design solutions that can enable urban residents to grasp information faster, reach destinations sooner and foster memorable experiences. In the daily negotiation of city living there may also be opportunities for educating residents about meaningful community-related topics. Graphic design can play a key role in addressing these goals. Environmental graphic design and wayfinding can help make urban experiences easier and more interesting. Incorporating the strategies of layering and sequencing within environmental graphic design solutions can strengthen the overall design and the particular messages being conveyed. One socially important topic city residents need to be made more aware of is the significance and challenges of homeless animals living within the urban environment. Services such as animal shelters and animal rescue groups are non-profit organizations that continue to face challenges in supporting needy animals despite government assistance. Public participation in solving these issues could help these organizations grow and function more smoothly. Through effective design planning and the use of environmental graphic design solutions, designers could experiment with message-making strategies that visually communicate more effectively to the public and yield more tangible positive results. This exploration investigates the roles of physical and informational layering, sequencing and visual hierarchy, and how these design strategies can help convey sensitive social messages effectively. This thesis also studies how specific urban spaces can contribute to environmental graphic design projects. It joins a larger continuum of design work that focuses on how space and certain physical contexts can be used strategically to host social messages and seeks to make those messages memorable through successful visual and verbal problem solving."--Abstract.

Urban segregation occurs when a city's diversities create perceived barriers around concentrated clusters of social groups. When these divisions are extreme enough, communities become shut off from the rest of the city and often fall into a perpetual cycle struggle and degradation. Research has shown that the success of a neighborhood relies in its ability to connect with other neighborhoods and economies throughout a city. It also demonstrates that cross-participation enhances the overall capacity of a community to operate both socially and economically. In a segregated city, there is an opportunity to use environmental graphic design elements to help improve the perceptions of a divided neighborhood and reconnect it back to the greater city population. This project explores the value that environmental graphic design elements can create to help promote and improve the perceptions of a neighborhood within a segregated urban landscape. A case-study project was developed with the neighborhood East Liberty, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Historically a thriving neighborhood, East Liberty has been plagued by over two decades of neglect and failed renewal efforts. Despite recent development efforts, many people still avoid this neighborhood. This case study uses a combination of research tactics and design prototypes to produce elements that attempt to improve the experience of East Liberty. The results from this project measured a significant improvement to the negative perceptions of East Liberty and demonstrated the potential to entice more people to visit and participate within this neighborhood.

"Understanding the significance of the physical environment in our lives is important to all of us as citizens and as future design professionals. Through this reader, we want to help urban design, architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture students develop social perspectives on their work. Accordingly, the book has several objectives: As an introduction to the field of human-environment studies, it offers working knowledge of theoretical concepts about the relationship between people and their environments. It teaches content from the viewpoint of three different American subcultures, bringing home the point that American life expresses multiple experiences, not one. The readings reflect our choice to compare and contrast Anglo-American, Chinese-American, and Hispanic-American experiences as examples. It engages students in research about our involvement with buildings, interiors, and places. We want students to know how to use other people's published research, and how to do their own original research. We want them to be able to contribute to programming and evaluation research. Hence, the book includes articles about data collection techniques and methodological issues. Many of the articles model how to think critically about the values embedded in design and the humanistic consequences for people, their behavior, and feelings. Because we define environment broadly to include the object and the body up to the neighborhood and city, the readings cover all scales. Each reading does double or triple duty. We list each one by year to encourage us all to use the varied readings for different purposes, and to show development of the field since its inception in the 1960s. Professor Galen Cranz, PhD Sociology (University of Chicago), has taught social and cultural processes in architectural and urban design, including research methods, since 1971 at Berkeley and Princeton. She is the author of "The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body and Design" (1998) and "The Politics of Park Design: A History of Urban Parks in America" (1982). Dr. Cranz has published dozens of scholarly articles. As a member of design teams, she won first prize in a national competition for an inner-city park in St. Paul, Minnesota; first prize for Parc la Villette, Paris; and seventh place in the Spectacle Island Design Competition, Boston. Current research activity includes body-conscious design, the sociology of taste, the office of the future, sustainable urban parks, and ethnographic research for designers. Dr. Cranz was recently awarded the 2011 Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Career Award."
