Book Description
When the Second World War began in 1939 it was thought that it would be fought along the same lines as the First World War, with the Allied air forces operating from both Britain and France. With the fall of Britain’s Northern European Allies in May 1940, all that changed. From then onwards, RAF aircraft operating over enemy and enemy-held territory necessitated flights across both the North Sea and the English Channel. This meant that aircrew in difficulties would be forced to come down in both of these bodies of water. Therefore it was essential that some form of rescue service be made available to fish these airman from the water. But there were no aircraft in existence at that time that were designed for such a task: initially all that could be done was to use land ‘planes to help locate anyone in the water, drop a dinghy to them, and then guide a boat to their position. Obviously a quicker and more reliable means of rescue was needed, and this came in the shape of the Supermarine Walrus, an amphibian airplane that could land on both sea and land. Several Flights of these airplanes were set up around the coast of Britain, concentrated mainly around the south and southeast of England. The Air Sea Rescue airmen did a magnificent job from 1941-45, rescuing hundreds of downed RAF and USAAF aircrew. It took a special type of airman to undertake these rescues – and another kind of courage. As the war in North Africa developed, Walrus aircraft were needed in the Mediterranean, and later on either side of the Italian coast. Walrus squadrons operated just as successfully in this theater as around Britain. Aircrew operating over any stretch of water could always count on the ASR boys coming to their aid. This is their story.

Book Description
This exciting new resource comprehensively describes Next Generation Emergency Services. It will enable implementers, regulators, legal and technical professionals to understand how the introduction of this new approach to delivering emergency services will impact their work. Beginning with an overview of the field and explaining what will change as the transition is made from circuit-switched to IP-based networks, the book provides guidance and detail related to the technologies that enable Next Generation services; the current state of emergency services; how to plan and execute a move to a standards-compliant NG9-1-1 service including the network design, the operations and maintenance procedures, and the legal and regulatory requirements and mandates. This Handbook explains NG9-1-1 networks: functions that they provide; the environments in which they are implemented; and the process by which they can be built and maintained. It provides a comparison to Basic 9-1-1 and E9-1-1 systems that dominate the field of emergency services today. The reader is guided through an emergency call from its inception by the Caller to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Call Taker to Dispatch to First Responders, explaining how Basic 9-1-1, E9-1-1 and NG9-1-1 support each leg of this journey. Chapters explaining the underlying networks and the service standards provide details to those who need them for their daily work or as reference. Next Generation 9-1-1 services are carried over data networks that use the Internet Protocol (IP) to establish communications flows between the calling and called parties. These flows are created in a fundamentally different way than are those created on the circuit switched networks that carry Basic 9-1-1 and E9-1-1 calls. The differences between packet switched and circuit switched networks are explained and the challenges and opportunities offered by creating call flows using packet switched networks are also described.

Best practices for making ethical, compassionate, and competent leadership decisions are also discussed. The ideal introduction to leadership concepts in modern-day emergency services agencies, Emergency Services Leadership: A Contemporary Approach is appropriate for EMS, fire services, law enforcement, emergency management, and military courses and is an ideal resource for department-specific training programs, especially for officer development. The authors weave personal experiences, interviews with current emergency services leaders, and leadership points to ponder throughout the chapters. End-of-chapter activities allow readers to explore their leadership capabilities and apply concepts presented in the text. The author team brings their extensive experience in emergency services, military application, and leadership research to this text. All of the authors are involved in higher education levels and serve in leadership capacities in various arenas.
