Book Description
This study examined the relationship of three factors (White racial identity development, religious identity development, and social desirability attitudes) with self-reported levels of multicultural counseling competency in White, master's level counselor trainees in the Midwest Region of the American Counseling Association. The results were generally consistent with previous research. The more sophisticated statuses of White racial identity development generally correlated with higher levels of multicultural counseling competency and social desirable responding. An expectation of this study based upon previous research was that as the statuses matured the levels of socially desirable responding would be lower which was not the case. Religious identity was examined through the Experiential/Rational Religious Identity development model and the associated instrument (Religious Identity Development Scale) which have been recently developed. Based upon the data there appears to be an association between less sophisticated Religious identity development statuses, social desirable responding, and multicultural counseling competency. This is the first study to date that has examined the relationships between religious identity development and multicultural counseling competency.

Book Description
In recent years, scholars have become more vocal regarding counselors and counseling psychologists responsibilities to advance efforts for social change . As a result, empirical investigations have started to evaluate variables that may contribute to trainees and mental health professionals desire to participate in social justice advocacy. However, most of these studies do not focus on trainees and mental health professionals who identify as White. The present study used quantitative analyses to explore nine hypotheses regarding the relationship between social justice, White racial identity, and multicultural competency among White master level trainees. Trainees who participated in this study were recruited from master level programs in counseling psychology or counselor education at a large Midwestern University. A total of 208 surveys were used in the analyses of this research design. The measures used include the Social Justice Advocacy Scale, the Oklahoma Racial Attitudes Scale-Revised, the Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Statistically significant results were found on six of the nine research questions. Major findings suggest that advanced multicultural training, knowledge about diversity and multicultural issues, and White racial attitude orientation have statistically significant effects on White master level trainees interest in social justice advocacy. The results of this study, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Book Description
Multicultural counseling competencies are stressed so as to maximize counseling efficacy. Previous research discovered how social desirability tends to confound counselors' self-perceived multicultural competence, which multicultural training helped to enhance. Still, counselors' perception of their own gender roles, ethnic backgrounds, and racial attitudes were absent in the training conducted at present. This dissertation examines how respondents' social desirability, race, gender, multicultural training, ethnic identity awareness, and color blind racial attitudes, influence counselors' self-perceived multicultural counseling competencies. The present dissertation collected with web-survey respondents of 338 counselors and counselor trainees, aged between 20 and 68. They are made of 279 females and 59 males. Analyzed with hierarchical multiple regression, the results obtained were as follows. Social desirability influenced respondents' reported multicultural competence, as measured by the Multicultural Counseling Inventory. The respondents' multicultural training, gender role perception, ethnic identity, and color blind racial attitudes did significantly contribute to their self-perceived multicultural counseling competence. These results indicated the critical importance of multicultural training that might do well to focus on enhancing counselors' awareness of their ethnic identities, flexible perceptions of gender roles, and reducing color-blind racial attitudes.
