Due to the magnitude and complexity of many of these projects, contractors have resorted to subcontracting to share responsibilities and mitigate project risks. The Zambian government has also invigorated the practice of subcontracting in the construction industry as it plays an important role in increasing economy viability and building capacity. Instead of improving project success, subcontracting can act as a catalyst for poor project outcomes. Though there are many reasons that contribute to problems from subcontracting, a poor relationship between main contractors and subcontractors can be seen as a notorious contributor affecting construction works. The study aimed at investigating the relationship between the main contractors and subcontractors in the Zambian construction industry and recommend a framework that can be implemented to better the relationship. The study also examined the effects of a poor interface between main contractors and subcontractors in Zambia. Data collection techniques used included literature review, interviews and questionnaire surveys. The relative importance index was used to determine the ranking of the results of the study. Using the results adduced from the study a main contractor-subcontractor non-contractual partnering model was developed. The study established that the relationship between main contractors and subcontractors in Zambia is poor therefore needing attention. Interface problems were caused by payment issues, poor communication, unexpected price escalations and poor construction work. In order to address interface problems, the study found that there was need for better communication between the parties, timely payments and subcontractors’ access to labour and machinery. However, the study, had some limitations that need consideration when interpreting the results found. The limitations included scarcity of specific literature on subcontracting in the Zambian construction industry, the size of the sample only being limited to Lusaka. Nevertheless, these limitations could be addressed through further studies.

The Australian construction industry has seen a shift in recent years from general contractors employing specialist trades directly to now subcontracting out almost all work. The importance of general contractor and subcontractor relationships has now become a more integral part of the overall success on construction projects. The research from this thesis presents the findings of a questionnaire survey administered to 85 subcontracting firms operating in the South Australian construction industry, with specific investigation into the relationship between the two parties and the impact the relationship has on the subcontractor's economic performance. Furthermore interviews were carries out to discover if the research had validity as the subject is virtually an unexplored area. Results showed that the healthier the relationship between the general contractor and the subcontractor the more likely the subcontractor is to make a profit at the end of the project. In addition to this the subcontractors found that trust and communication were the two most importance elements of a construction relationship.

Conflicts are unavoidable in the projects; there is no project that is free from conflicts. At the same time, sub-contracting has been, and continues to be a very important aspect in building construction industry, as standard procedure in construction. Thus, the study aims at analyzing the conflicts between main contractor and domestic sub-contractors in building construction projects in Tanzania. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in this research. Data was collected using questionnaires. A total of 38 questionnaires were distributed to building construction and domestic sub-contractors found in Dar-es-Salaam, and 32 were returned fairly filled for analysis accounting to 84.2%. On the experience in terms of the connection between main and sub-contractor; findings revealed 81.3% their relationship to be good. 43.8% said yes to have ever been in a project that did not go well because of problems between main and sub-contractor, while 53.1% said “no”. Moreover, on whether the project contract prepared are to each party specifications and satisfaction; 84.4% of the respondents said sometimes. In terms of the availability of a penalty clause in the project contract, if one of the parties fails to comply; 56.3% of the respondents said sometimes. 40.6% of the respondents said the payment is normally done immediately after completion. Furthermore, 75.0% said the contract is prepared by the main contractor. Besides, findings revealed PPRA as the most used form of sub-contract by 56.3% respondents. Additionally, 65.5% of the respondents have had a share of conflicts, either as a main contractor against a sub-contractor, or as a sub-contractor against a main contractor. Also, some respondents revealed, failing to follow instruction, delaying in materials delivery to site, poor quality of work, as well as main contractor's squeezing them firmly on the quoted prices, leaving them fighting to make ends meet, alongside experiencing huge loses; as the main areas sparking the conflicts. Finally,69.6% reported the extent of occurrences of conflicts in Tanzanian building construction industry to be frequently. Moreover, Findings revealed delays in payment, poor communication, lack of trust, consultants delay in approving work and sample material, and shortage of construction materials in the market as well as unexpected price escalations are the factors with the highest frequency in causing conflicts. The study concludes that for the project to run smoothly and with less conflicts, proper attention must be paid to all recommendations such as good communication, cooperation and timely payment; early notice and proper records keeping; sub-contractor should have enough fund for project; certify work on time and timely payment; and risk management plan.

Most of the construction works in the Zambian construction industry are executed by foreign contractors who are only allowed to tender for large-scale construction projects. These works amount to 85% of the national contract value. Foreign contractors are seen as better performers in project deliverables of time, cost and schedule compared to local contractors. This research aimed to investigate the extent to which national culture affects contractor performance in the Zambian construction industry. A comparison of culture and performance was made between local and foreign companies in Grade 1 and 2, using Hofstede's national culture framework to determine performance improvements of local contractors.. The findings revealed that foreign contractors manage uncertainty avoidance better than local contractors. The clients rated foreign contractors as better performers apart from health and safety. Local contractors need to improve performance if they are to compete favourably with the foreign contractors' success record.

This book sheds light on structural drivers that led to the Chinese omnipresence in African infrastructure markets and offers a strategic-relational approach to the study of African agency in Sino-African infrastructure encounters.
