The purpose of this study was to examine if verve had any impact on the academic achievement of African American middle school students. The three guiding questions of this research were: 1. Is there a significant difference in the verve levels between African American and European American students? 2. Is there a significant difference in verve levels of African American male and African American female students in middle school? 3. Is there a significant difference in the academic achievement of AfricanAmerican and European American students who possess high and low verve in the areas of reading and math? A 24-item questionnaire was administered to 211 middle school students todetermine if any verve levels were present, and if so, to what degree did the verve levels impact academic performance? The findings were: 1. The verve levels were different between the African American and the European American students. The African American students in this study possessed higher amounts of verve. 2. The verve levels were different between the African American males and the African American females. The African American females in this study had higher amounts of verve than the African American males. 3. There was no relationship between the higher verve levels among the African American and European American students and their academic achievement in reading and math.

The present research study is motivated by a practical need to hear the perspectives of middle school Black students and their parents concerning learning and academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to explore how sixth grade Black students and their parents perceive their lived experiences with the academic achievement gap phenomenon and whether they believe racial identity and racism affect education. This study used the interpretive research orientation as described by Merriam (1998), and thus its goal is to understand and interpret the meaning of the participants' experiences and the factors that contribute to these experiences. Review of student records, school document analysis, a reflexive field journal, in-depth interviews and classroom observations were utilized in an effort to capture the participants' voices as narrative moments that Geertz (1973) describes as "thick descriptions." Data analyses for this study used a holistic approach as espoused by Creswell (2007) in order to identify the study used a holistic approach as espoused by Creswell (2007) in order to identify the emergence of common themes. Emergence of common themes were identified through the use of what Stake (1995) describes as "direct interpretation of the individual instance" (p. 74) and "categorical aggregation of instances until something can be said about them as a class" (p. 74). Many African American students are affected by the academic achievement gap phenomenon (Ogbu, 1974; Cokley, 2003). Nevertheless, one voice is blaringly silent in the body of knowledge on the academic achievement gap--that of Black students and parents. This study was designed to hear these voices.
