Excerpt from The Redemption of Egypt In this book I have endeavoured to give some account of the physical and social characteristics of Egypt, and to exhibit these characteristics in connection with the work of political reorganization and industrial development which is now in progress. The sketches and the information which I have ventured to present to the reader are the fruits of a visit, undertaken for the purpose, during the winter of 1898-99.
