Hubbell, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, California State University, SacramentoAre you teaching preschool special needs children? What, where, and how do you start? Not only do you have the responsibility of teaching young children, which means combing through records for important medical information and goals for each child, but you also have to set up the classroom, communicate with parents, teach language through play, facilitate Circle Time, maintain a calm classroom, and so much more. This book provides systematic strategies for handling all of these challenging tasks. There are numerous solutions and tips-contained in this book-which will help you with the day-to-day classroom experience run smoothly. Do you wish you knew... * What to do before the first day of teaching? * How to organize the day? * What to do during Circle Time? * How to integrate movement? * How to teach language skills through play? * How to provide a calm environment? Then this book is for you! It's really more of a "manual," because it provides a simple framework for setting up and running your classroom. It will reduce the understandable anxieties you might have about starting up your own classroom for the first time. Don't be afraid to be unconventional-think outside the box when you're teaching. In a mild to moderate classroom the abilities of the children can vary widely. Why did you get into teaching? It was probably not in order to worry about setting up and managing a classroom. The tips in this manual will help you become the teacher you want to be, without dwelling on the stress of setting up your classroom. This book lets you focus on what you actually want to do-TEACH! If you are a parent of a special needs child, you will learn tips about how to elicit communication with your child through play, learn simple behavior strategies that work, and learn about possible other issues that might be affecting your child.

Book Description
Inclusive education is an area of growing interest worldwide over the past decade among policy makers, education officers as well as parents. This book tracks the development in the domain of special education in Singapore tracing the provisions made for the inclusion of children with special needs into mainstream schools. While it is observed that there have been actual policies in place to allow this shift in outlook at the primary and secondary level, much more can be done at the preschool level. Children learn the basics of literacy and numeracy as well as life skills at a very young age. Hence, it is important to provide the platform to form the foundation of their habits and attitudes at an early stage. Research has shown that inclusive education benefits children with special needs as they learn from observation and gain a sense of belonging and self-worth through interaction with their typically developing peers. Inclusive education also serves to cultivate acceptance and understanding in typically developing children. Therefore, it is important to ensure that more is done to implement inclusive education at the formative years of children. Some of the challenges faced in implementing inclusion at the preschool level have been identified and suggestions have been made to overcome these challenges. This book intends to create awareness as well as to push for actual changes in the education policies so that inclusive education will be embraced by all and become a reality on a larger scale.

Book Description
We live in a world that is transitioning from focus on early childhood education within individual countries into a global perspective that considers how early childhood education is conducted in many diverse cultures and environments. The challenge on a global basis is how to develop programs in countries and environments that are different from a specifically western perspective. Economic, geographic, and cultural influences infuse early childhood programs around the world. In 1999, a group of educators representing 36 countries developed guidelines for establishing minimum standards for preschool programs. A purpose for developing the guidelines was to provide guidance for countries that wished to evaluate and improve their own programs. A second purpose was to help developing countries initiating preschools to have relevant information about quality programs. The later development of an assessment tool based on the Global Guidelines served as a vehicle to use the guidelines to assess a single program or multiple programs. The continuing work with these guidelines in many countries throughout the world since 2000 has resulted in the collection of information that reveals the uniqueness of programs in different countries.
