Book Description
Although positivism dismissed myths as childish fancy, bound to be superseded by reason, there has been a continuous reappraisal of the power of myths since the 19th century. Once viewed as primitive and unreliable accounts and an inadequate and distorted form of knowledge, myths came to be perceived as exemplary narratives, consisting of rich and complex symbolic constructs that carry meaning and a connection to reality. Myths then came to be regarded as a privileged expression of the human soul and of its possibly submerged and unconscious abysses and dramas. Rather than inherently obscure and elusive to a rational grasp, mythical narratives would therefore be driven by logical reasoning, giving shape to a particular worldview of life and humankind. The enduring power of mythical narrative is attested to by its very plasticity, subject to multiple recreations informed by changing concerns and insights. Mythical narratives have thus attracted the interest of various disciplines, from ethnology and history to philosophy, literature, sociology, politics, the history of religions and art history. This interdisciplinary volume studies how myths are inscribed and recycled within both individual and collective heritage, and examines the personal and political implications of multifaceted engagement with myths as one of the forms through which societies try to make sense of their perplexities.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Power of Form Applied to Geometric Tracery: One Hundred Designs and Their Foundations Resulting From One Diagram The Author of this treatise was first in the field to, prove, that not only was the whole detail of Gothic Architecture founded upon geometric law, but that the power of design still remained with us, waiting only for its application. In addressing himself to the learner, for whose especial use his labours here are intended, he does not wish for one moment to question the previous knowledge upon this subject possessed by many practised Architects, who must have travelled over the same ground as himself in searching for the primary elements of their profession. But whatever the knowledge of others may have been upon our present subject, it has not been given to the world, and the Author's claim holds good as the originator of the conjurations embodied here and in other works, and which, like all sleight-of - hand tricks, are very easy. In short everybody can do them - that is, when they know how. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This book examines Cornelius Castoriadis’s elucidation of the social imaginary within human societies, assessing how strict dichotomisation between autonomous and heteronomous modes of institution hinders further insights into the creative capacities of social imaginary, while also imposing limits on Castoriadis’s own assessment of the ‘partially’ autonomous situation of modern societies.
